Which is the best modern sports Rolex for vintage lovers?

 By: Mr.Gatsby : July 20th, 2018-21:13
For all you vintage lovers out there who relish the smaller/thinner case profile of vintage Rolexs, the gilt and patina on dials, what would be your go-to modern day sports Rolex ? I have asked myself the question repeatedly but I can’t seem to answer it....

Deepsea (blue)

Deepsea is not an evolution. A true Rolex .. the ultimate “oyster case” ie deepest water resistance. It’s 100% original in its design. Everything on it is “first”.. which all vintage Rolex lovers are seeking for ie the first, the original, and the DNA.. ...

That’s a great watch.

Can see why you’d pick it! Only problem for me is that it’s too big for me, otherwise I’d loved it

Tudor GMT 😂😂😂 [nt]

116600 Sea Dweller

I look at it and see a modern 1665 great white. Also the new root beer has that feeling. Best. René

Thanks Rene

That was one of my candidates indeed

Depends....

If you mean “modern” or current range. If you mean last 25 years or so as modern then; Sub: 14060M GMT: 16710

Good choices [nt]

Baron, I would mean current range but

I’d say pieces in the 90s should be included, since they are not vintage by any of our standards. But yes curious to know what current pieces you’d think of as well

Uhmmm

I would be struggling a bit as I think the current production doesn’t have much of that vintage feel. 116500 would be in there.

You sir.......seem to live inside my head

Tbh, the new air king and Daytona are top choices on my list. Problem for the Air King for me is still size. I wish it was 39mm instead. Found it slightly chunkier than what I’d think is of better proportions as a substitute to the vintages. Maybe I’m wro...

If current collection either Explorer 1 or Daytona steel ceramic

 By: Miranda : July 21st, 2018-00:49
if since the 1990’s either 16700 or 14060M 4 line

Thanks Miranda.

I like your choices. For me the Explorer I was one of my watches, however I could never quite get use to how ‘cold it feels’ as a modern piece versus the warmth of vintage Explorers. I decided to not buy one in the end.

For me only one with ANY vintage feel.

And that’s the White Daytona. I actually think they nailed this one and it is a perfect fusion between modern and vintage. I actually get a great feel from the Plat Daytona also and the Brown is genius. Cheers. M.

Love how we are all different.

The Black Daytona has no vintage feel for me what so ever. Maybe because it was the 6263 Panda which set me off 30 years ago. M.

Yep....,

..... we are all different I would say the both have a vintage feel, but only a very small feel, and that the black is more vintage feel than the white. But yep..... everyone sees things differently

Interesting comparison pic.

To me the black is just a bezel change. The white is an attempt to use the white and black contrast. Had the black been with white sub dials then game on and I would defiantly have to have one. Luckily for my bank it did not. M. ...

Neither copied the original

Both had a twist on the original.

My take is

 By: keks : July 21st, 2018-23:19
That it would be the steel ceramic Daytona in either dial version. But the BB58 is one step closer in my view....

Agree 100% with B.B. but I thought it was just Rolex.

If i can go off track even more the 60th Speedy kills them all in my view. M.

Of the current offerings, I would say Explorer 1.

Everything else with ceramic bezels, maxi/squared cases, PCLs, etc. seems flashy and distinct from vintage Rolex (including Rolex of even 1 generation ago).
