Hope everyone is having a wonderful first weekend of the last month of 2017! Contemplating a new purchase and this is going to be my first PC. How does the case/ dial etc look to your keen eyes? This particular example comes out of China. A flat PP box is...  

but I may not necessarily buy this particular one. I say that because I would prefer to buy a used Patek that is less than 30 years old with its original winding box, certificate of origin which may not necessarily mean that the watch has been well kept b... 

First, in 3940 you have one of the classiest perpetual calendars made by Patek. I love the reference. However, when buying one, I would want it to have all its original box and papers. It’s hard to see the condition of this one from the scans but it does ... 

I realize having B&P is great. But considering the age of the watch, and the fact that one can get an EOA from PP, would it make that much of a difference? Sure, on a newer reference, like the 5711 I purchased not long ago, I insisted on the entire se... 

Also, I notice the micro rotor does not have a Calatrava Cross. Is this normal?

So you have a vintage watch that has absolutely no paperwork at all. The extracts cost very little to buy and can be done quite quickly. One would need to ask why the seller had not done this? For me, that is odd. You say the watch is priced very well. Uh... 

I have asked him to obtain the Extracts. Let's see what he says. Do the pictures bring up any red flags concerning the dial, movement etc? There is not much material on the 3940 as one would find on vintage Rolex (for example)

Case looks polished and edges seem soft. I have a 3940J. Mine has hallmarks on the lugs. I don't see any here. Also, does anybody know where in the production run the watch was sold with a deployment clasp? If and when you decided to put a deployment clas... 

I would not buy a Patek manufactured post 1980 if it did not come with its certificate of origin and its original box, especially most 3940s came with a Patek watch winder box. Extract from archives is fine to me on much older vintage watches. Arguably it... 

I think an even better if would be to have it in blue dial. I tried it once in a boutique in London in 37m blue turquoise dial. Was amazing.

I don't believe the 3940 came in a blue dial variant. You might be thinking about the 5140 perchance?

blu deal. This one is one of the very first of Serie 2, without cross on the years , very nice... Probabily from 1987 or 88. Hier is the 1 serie from 86 ...

I missed mine! Why not bring it to PP and have it checked? If they come back good, then I would worry less about the B&P if the price has factored these missing items, unless you intend to resell it and the future buyer might insist on them. Good luck. Me... 

Comes with the large ebony wood box (which I believe cannot be original to the watch) and extract which dates the particular reference number to 1986. I always thought the first production run of the 3940 circa 1986 was sans the lines dividing the leap ye...  

It did appear strange to me as well. But there are a few other 3940s with just 22k engraved on the rotor. Maybe they transitioned from that to the cross at some point of time

Maybe it is a 3941 which only came with the see thru back. Assuming you are still interested in this watch, having the seller provide you with the Extract should be helpful. Best, Patekova

I do have a picture of the extract as well and the movement number matches as mentioned in it. The Extract however states that the model is a 3940J. The seller does not have the solid caseback

Is it looks well polished, and I’m not sure the buckle is right (that’s minor) But otherwise it looks ok. It is not a first series, but an early second series.
