Patek Philippe

It is all down to personal preferences

I would not buy a Patek manufactured post 1980 if it did not come with its certificate of origin and its original box, especially most 3940s came with a Patek watch winder box. Extract from archives is fine to me on much older vintage watches. Arguably it is the watch that is the most important item here but there would be quite a few among us purists who would like the complete set of box, original papers and a watch that has been kept in mint condition even if it was 30 years old. If you have peace of mind buying the watch without any paperwork and its winding box, you should do so. But I do believe there are quite a few 3940s out there with the complete set which may arguably cost more but you are buying a piece of Patek history and as such, you might want to think if the papers and box are worth the additional cost.
