With all the excitement about the 3 new grand complication Pateks, did anyone notice or care, but me that at least for now 5496 is gone! đ˘đ
Yes, itâs true. Neither version, R or P are listed on Patekâs website as being part of the Collection. I am envisioning a lot of yawnsđ´
Letâs face it retrograde perpetual 5496 has never been what one might describe as being a âpopularâ watch. I am certainly not criticizing the watch. Hey thatâs my wrist and my watch on it. I love it. I think it is a fantastic watch. I recognize I represent the (small) minority view.
Patek tried really hard. 3 different dials for the P, but .... apparently, at least for now Patek is saying, âenough is enoughâ! And maybe that is a smart move. After 5050, 5059, 5159/5160 and finally 5496 it is time to move on.
While 5496 obviously has common elements with 5050, most collectors prefer 5050 by a very wide margin.
(5059 and 5159/5160 which have the same movement and functions are sort of off by themselves. Wonderful and unusual officerâs style hinged cases and different and appealing dial designs. Despite that, they are also not among the most popular perpetuals.)
So am I really sad to see what MIGHT be the end of 5496? Definitely not. I like that it is not very popular. I like that apparently relatively few were sold. Did I hear someone say â5020â - another very unpopular watch during its production run. Often described as uglyâ it eventually and weirdly came to be thought of as âbeautiful and iconicâ Try to figure that one out.
Anyway, what are your thoughts about 5496 on its merits or lack thereof; and its possible demise? And of course any images from 5496 owners would be wonderful to see.
Best, Patekova
