Why 5970G and not 3940P...hmmm
...I'm not sure if my reasoning is valid but I will try.
When I first notice 3940P, I like the watch very much due to its simplicity and very thin case.
But when I strap it on my tiny wrist, I find that the watch sort of 'disappear'.
It does not have a presence and at that moment, I'm not sure if I want to spend this amount of money
for a piece that is so stealth. And then, of course, I convince myself not to get it because it doesn't have a second hand.
When you look at the dial, it is 'dead'....nothing is moving.
So I started to look at 3970 and do love it as its dial is pretty similar to 3940.
Almost got the 3970 but was awe struck by 5970G as I love its dial configuration and color.
When I finally manage to see a 5970G in person, I order it the next day without hesistation.
In the ideal world, I would still love to have a 3970 but with my recent property purchase, I guess the chance is slim:-)
If you are considering a 5970/3970 over the 3940, I say get the former.
It will be very diificult for you to justify buying a 5970/3970 after you have purchased the 3940.
Your mind will try convince you that the 3940 is good enough but you yourself know it isn't.
The other Perpetual that you may want to look into is 5050. I think it is very beautiful and classic and I do think it is a watch
that one can live with without being tempted by the world of 5970/3970. It is in its own class, imho :-)

3940p question
By: Yash : January 1st, 2007-10:57
Hello, I may have the opportunity to purchase an Patek 3940 in platinum soon. The other metals in that ref all have interchangeable solid and transparent case backs. The plat does not. What I would like to know is this; Does the platinum version come as s...
You're right...

the solid case back is standard on the 3940P, no sapphire back available. Regarding the dial of the platinum and WG, i had the opportunity at PP in Geneva to handle both models at the same time and the dials are exactly the same.
Thanks

Hello guys, Thanks for that information. CL, you are right it is a beautiful watch but I prefer the movements with the full size rotor. Visually, much more attractive. Jerome, on the subject of the dial, you are correct, the Patek brochure lists the dial ...
I'll remeber that
By: Yash : January 1st, 2007-14:12
CL, I'll bear that in mind. I find the brochures and publicity shots tend to give slightly inaccurate and differing colourations to the actual "in the metal" colours anyway. May I ask, why the 5970g instead of the 3940p? Both are great watches and I am ye...

Makes sense

You are reasoning and making a lot of sense. The more posts I have read and the more research I have done, the more I feel, that deep down no other watch gives as much satisfaction as a top end Patek. Only IMHO, of course. A friend of mine who has handled...

I own a 3940 and a 3970. They are so different. The 3940 is amazing with such a sophistcated complication in such a thin case. Truly elegant. I could never part with mine. A true classic. The 3970 is a chronometer. Beautifully designed but an entirely dif...
Problems, Problems

The problem here, of course, is that everyone here has valid points. The 5970 has a totally different character to 3940. A different look, feel etc... How on earth does one choose between them??? It's difficult because none of these watches are essential ...

Suitbert, you are right. Things like dial colour can very quite a lot. I've seen this myself close up. Those shots are simply beautiful. As moderator, you will have seen a lot of Pateks' and I think you would agree, that when they get it right, they reall...
