That's a difficult answer to give as I didn't see the 5170P in the metal yet
However, as of today, I must say that I love this 5170P, as you say, it also appeal to me much more than the previous versions.
I lvoe the color and how it is done, I love the printings decoration, the scale, the hands... I love it.
Now, about the diamond markers. I would have prefered without but I think that I would enjoy the diamonds very much too. A very different spirit, a unique feeling... as long as we get rid of the 1980's souvenirs.
Since a few years, Patek is trying to bring an additional image of the brand and, even if this is not perfect yet, I think it is on the right line to succeed in the near future.
On the movement's side, I would put both calibers on the same level, even if they appeal for different reasons.
I like the 5070P very much too (as I like the G as well) and think it is already iconic.
So, I like the 5170P much better thus it is the one I would buy with no hesitation compared to the 5070P. Even more so if we consider today's 5070P's price.
On the level of the brand's collections and history, both are on the same level even if the 5170P is too young to be iconic yet.
This is a difficult question to ask on a forum where so much sincere and pure people like so much watch making and Patek Philippe in this case. That's why people who have their own opinions will naturally tend to defend their "baby".
That's why anyone who wishes to buy a watch should also focus on what he wants and what he likes in watches.
I'm proud to like a brand that has launched the 5070P and the 5170P.
Best, Mark
