Personally, I'm still trying to get used to the look of the 5170J. The dial feels a bit larger, despite the 39,4mm diameter. I suspect this is due to the conical bezel and also the white opaline dial that makes it look larger versus say, a black dial. I do however like the dial layout of Roman (XII, VI) and stick markers. The only complain is the empty ring space around the 7-9 o'clock.

It was specifically the pulsometric scale that attracted me to this version.

Thank you for your kind words. My knowledge is definitely limited! And the purpose of this so-called review is to hear from collectors - especially the old timers - how they view the ref. 5170. I am quite sure at some point I will move to look at the 5170...

I think you chose well my friend. The 5170 is an amazing reference and wears better than the larger 5070. I prefer the esthetics of the 5070 and also the CH27 (I am a fan of the Lemania 2310 base caliber)...
but that does not diminish the 5170 nor it's in-house caliber, both of which are excellent. I have also thought about adding a 5170G or P eventually if I stumble upon one in NOS condition 😉
A true dress watch...
...that happens to have a chronograph function. I don't need a pulsations dial, but I tried one one a couple of years ago--if it had leaf hands I'd probably own it. It is very classy and very easy to wear on my 7.25" wrist...
