The 5070 was the first manual from Patek in 60 years or so and was hence very sought after, to say the least. The 5170 being in-house and technically far, far more advaced than the 5070 was not able to repeat the craze of the 5070. The craze would have be... 

I do agree that the 5170 came at the wrong time. It should’ve been produced earlier, in response to the datograph back in ‘99.

Personally, I'm still trying to get used to the look of the 5170J. The dial feels a bit larger, despite the 39,4mm diameter. I suspect this is due to the conical bezel and also the white opaline dial that makes it look larger versus say, a black dial. I d...

I do share many of your arguments,especially about the perfect proportions and the historical relevance for PP. My choice was with the G version but it was a close race with the yellow gold model. As for the comparison with the 5070,can one really overloo...

Thank you for your kind words. My knowledge is definitely limited! And the purpose of this so-called review is to hear from collectors - especially the old timers - how they view the ref. 5170. I am quite sure at some point I will move to look at the 5170...

Yellow gold really looks good on this piece.

but that does not diminish the 5170 nor it's in-house caliber, both of which are excellent. I have also thought about adding a 5170G or P eventually if I stumble upon one in NOS condition 😉

...that happens to have a chronograph function. I don't need a pulsations dial, but I tried one one a couple of years ago--if it had leaf hands I'd probably own it. It is very classy and very easy to wear on my 7.25" wrist...

I do understand your love for the leaf hands — I like them a lot. For me the hands of the 5170j fits in with the baton and Roman VI and XII markers... give it another go ! Best Gatsby

I’m interested to know why you’re drawn to the 5170 even after owning the legendary 5070. Also, which reference/case metal will you go for ?
