Patek Philippe's limited editions for the New York Grand Exhibition

By: Mark in Paris : July 12th, 2017-14:35
Dear Purists, As you expected, here are the novelties that Patek Philippe has presented in the context of the "Art of Watches Grand Exhibition" held in New York this year from July 13 to 23 at Cipriani 42nd Street. They created 9 limited editions for wris...

I like these...

 By: Clueless_Collector : July 12th, 2017-13:36
5531R because it's nice and MR by PP is always a dream. 5522A and 7200/50 because they are the ones I can afford, LOL... Thank you for these details and great information, Mark. Originally, I thought only 3 watches 5531, 5230 and 5522 were released. Rgds ...

Yes, 5531R is very appealing

By: Mark in Paris : July 13th, 2017-07:04
I first thought a few weeks ago that it was a Minute Repeater on which they added the center enameled part but it is so much more than that in the end. That's why leaks I think may bring more problems than the pleasure to see on a picture a novelty yet to...

Thanks a lot for this comprehensive report, Mark. Very informative!

 By: Pretty Boy : July 12th, 2017-13:43
I wasn't sure whether I would like 5522 either. But as you have pointed out, the new pictures look very promising indeed. I think in the metal it will be a stunner. Same experience as with 5524G. Best, Volker

Indeed, the first "front" picture didn't make it look very nice

By: Mark in Paris : July 13th, 2017-07:06
You're right to point out the 5524 and I wonder if maybe this new 5522 will not improve even more the image and attractiveness of the 5524. Thanks for your kind comments Volker Best, Mark

Amazing summary as always Mark

 By: keks : July 12th, 2017-13:56
As to the editions I am amazed at how good they are. The 5531 is magical to say the least. As are the wood dial pieces. As for the more realistic pieces the blue world timer is quite amazing but not something I have room or budget for in my collection how...

It is a nice surprise indeed

By: Mark in Paris : July 13th, 2017-07:18
I think it can be easy to lack of consistency. In terms of themes choice and result, they managed to release a stunning collection. I also like the 5230, especially since I saw it in the video I linked toward PP's site at the beggining of my post (even if...

Great lineup!

 By: drphileasfogg : July 12th, 2017-14:03
Envious as I will not be able to get my hands on this new and more simple execution of the pilot watch. The enamels on the wrist and pocket watches are just great. Regarding the pocket watches, the New York sky lines are even more beautiful than on the wr...

This is indeed quite frequent

By: Mark in Paris : July 13th, 2017-07:23
We may like some of these watches but may not be able to get them (and in the mean time we like when the number remains low). Like cars, it is nice to admire the work and enjoy them without necessarily buying them. I would have liked to get the 5230G or a...

Nice job, Mark

 By: TheMadDruid : July 12th, 2017-14:54
What I find interesting is that the 5230 NY is the same price, in dollars, as the 5230 that came out last year. I don't think Patek would have been criticized if it had charged a premium for that dial.

This is indeed something I appreciate

By: Mark in Paris : July 13th, 2017-07:32
The prices of Patek's limited editions are never higher than the regular models and Patek never says it is more expensive because it is LE. It is totally different than saying we make LEs thus it will worth more so we decide to add a premium. That's why L...

Really like the 5230

 By: Hororgasm : July 12th, 2017-15:03
But I am guessing pretty much sold out, gotta be trading at some ridiculous premium!! Thanks for the report Best Horo

We'll see how it goes

By: Mark in Paris : July 13th, 2017-09:04
but I imagine that at least the first year, prices will be high on the secondary market. I learned to be patient in that field :p Thanks Horo for your feedback, nice to see you here. Best, Mark

Thank you Mark for all these info. Great job!

 By: Alkiro1 : July 12th, 2017-15:07
Well, the 5531 NY Special Edition is really gorgeous but I have a bias, it's a minute repeater (by far my favourite complication). Regarding its case, I'm less thrilled than you. The other one I like a lot is the "Sheridan style". May be a little bit "too...

My pleasure Alkiro :)

By: Mark in Paris : July 13th, 2017-09:17
I would love to get a minute repeater too. The 5078, the 5029 or the classical 5339 that Bruno shot a while ago are very appealing to me. I recommend that you read the special book Patek published about their line-up of MR models, it is a gorgeous little ...

My pleasure Mark 🙏

 By: Alkiro1 : July 13th, 2017-09:48
I'll have a look at this PP book. I'm quite sure I'll be like this 🤤 like I was after my visit to the Geneva PP museum 😁 Best wishes Alkiro

Thanks for the info!

 By: EJR888 : July 12th, 2017-15:19
Hi, thanks for the all the info and easy to understand this text with too many photos and without the technical hard terms. I enjoyed this photos in macro and liked the "state of art" of Patek. Best regards, EJR.

You're welcome,

By: Mark in Paris : July 13th, 2017-13:06
Thanks for your feedback and comments EJR, it is nice sharing and discussing such event with everyone Best, Mark

Thanks for the great summary Mark!

As usual the coverage scope and detail here on the forum greatly exceeds what is available from any other source. Bravo, Brandon

Thanks for another great write up Mark

 By: NML77 : July 12th, 2017-16:45
I look forward to seeing the exhibition next week. I think that Patek did an overall amazing job. Some really fine pieces. I have asked my AD about the 5522 and 5230 so hopefully I will will be allocated something. Regardless I think the exhibition should...

I think from the first feedback that you won't regret it

By: Mark in Paris : July 13th, 2017-15:37
I'm impressed from Patrick_y's posts how much effort they have put in setting the event. This is really something to visit if we can. Great news about your request, I hope you can get one (the 5230 is a model very tempting to me). keep us informed! Thanks...

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

By: Mark in Paris : July 13th, 2017-15:33
We have a lot of pleasure reading about such events and brands so we try to share what we can find when we can Thanks a lot for your very nice compliments Brandon. Best, Mark

The world timer looks good

 By: patrickmaniac : July 12th, 2017-16:46
Both versions. Cheers PAt

It is a complication very well chosen for the event I think

By: Mark in Paris : July 13th, 2017-15:39
but maybe is it just because I like it in the first place too. We share the same appeal for the 5230G Thanks for chimming in Patrick. Best, Mark

Thank you for the great review, Mark.

 By: masterspiece : July 12th, 2017-16:49
Looking forward to seeing these pieces next week in NY. Aloha, Bob

My pleasure Bob

From what I see here and from Patrick_y's posts, I think you'll have a great time! And thank you for your nice words Best, Mark

So many new watches for just one city.....

 By: MTF : July 12th, 2017-17:39
Mark, Thanks for the simplified precis of the new watches. I don't remember reference numbers that many sites use of exclusively instead of descriptive names. We can't all be walking catalogues! How lucky some people are to be in NYC for this Patek Philip...

Yes but what city :)

By: Mark in Paris : July 14th, 2017-12:55
I've never been there but love the image I have from NYC, the dynamism, variety of people, arts etc... From the first feedback we see, yes it is something I would also love to visit. Hopefully we have our site Thanks Melvyn. Best, Mark

Enjoy the evening :) [nt]

By: Mark in Paris : July 15th, 2017-13:06

Thanks Mark for the detailed

 By: beejo : July 12th, 2017-18:16
Review of the watches,I thought only they introduced three watches. There is more than one watch that I would like to buy,Although the minute repeater is out of my budget I think it's the most beautiful especially the sunset version. The others would be t...

Indeed, I'm also glad to see so many different models

By: Mark in Paris : July 14th, 2017-13:00
even if some of them are "piece unique". The 5531, even if out of budget for many, is indeed something that is very succesful from the first posts I could read. I love the case and I love the dial (enamel part but also the carved parts). There will be als...

Nice line up but "limited" is a loose term

 By: emcquillan : July 12th, 2017-20:07
600 pcs for the time only steel pilot doesn't seem very limited at all. Limited editions in some cases are very appealing and exclusive, but in most cases it seems like gimmick marketing. Packaging the same product and calling it limited. The WT MR is pre...

Well, I think there are different aspects to take into account

By: Mark in Paris : July 14th, 2017-13:06
First, the price. If a LE is made just to justify a higher price, then it is not good, but hopefully here it is the same as the standard models (or equivalent). And 600 pieces for the demand Patek faces, is not that high imho. Of course if you consider a ...

All great points Mark

 By: emcquillan : July 15th, 2017-09:56
I agree the demand will devour the 600 pcs. I also like the New York skyline WT. Best,

Great report, thanks Mark.

 By: dr.kol : July 12th, 2017-22:30
I will go together with my wife & young daughter to see the exhibition. There're two watches I would love to get: the steel pilot and Calatrava for ladies. However, I think this time it might be too difficult. All the watches are nice but nowadays I'm mos...

From all we read and hear, you'll certainly have a wonderful time there...

By: Mark in Paris : July 15th, 2017-04:55
It really seems to be an outstanding event whether for people who know about watches but also people just curious about visiting a nice event or enjoying Art in general. The 2 pieces you're spotting are very nice but I think that you'll come out of the ev...

Thanks Mark. I got sad news:

 By: dr.kol : July 15th, 2017-07:50
no access to the pieces I wanted to get. But that's life and I will save a big bunch of money. No hard feelings. Best, Kari

Well, as I said before

By: Mark in Paris : July 15th, 2017-13:07
There will be other pieces inthe future for sure that will be worth begin patient Thanks for the feedback Kari. Best, Mark

To be honest,

 By: dr.kol : July 16th, 2017-04:24
my shopping list starts to be too long. Next ones 5131P, 5370P and two special order platinum watches. Best Kari

I may sound like and americanophile but

 By: Ares501 - Mr Green : July 13th, 2017-00:06
I really love all presented watches...I found pocket watches particularly great and thematically very a propos...only thing missing for me is picture of Baseball table clock...would love to see it. This series of PP for particular market is 100% hit for m...

Indeed, I'm also very surprised and attracted by the pocket watches :)

By: Mark in Paris : July 16th, 2017-09:18
They are not usually my cup of tea, I imagine it really depends on what decoration you choose and what theme is chosen. That tells a lot about the impact on the vent of the coherence of a theme and how it is put into the colelctions. There weren't picture...

Wow - that's a lot of new stuff - thanks for the very detailed summary!

 By: Mr Glass : July 13th, 2017-00:28
Varied and interesting releases. Not all to my taste (and for sure not my pocket) but some I found surprisingly appealing. The 5522 in particular attracted me, despite not being a pilot fan in general. There is something about it!

My pleasure :)

By: Mark in Paris : July 16th, 2017-15:10
Yes, there is quite a lot of diversity and I think that nearly everyone can find one thing he may like (as long as one likes rare handcrafts pieces). I feel the same as you do, it was nearly a surprise to me too, I like pieces I usually don't really pay a...

Great report mark Thanks

 By: watch-guy.com : July 13th, 2017-01:33
I am still very ambivalent of the "aviator" but obviously have not seen irl The enamelled usa series look amazing esp jazz and bridge

I noticed the "Jazz" indeed

By: Mark in Paris : July 16th, 2017-15:17
Its is a modern dial theme on a Patek watch that is usually on the more traditional side. A watch quite cool to wear imho Yes, I think that the 5522 really needs to be seen in the metal. I like this grainy blue dial that seems to be the same than on the 5...

They are mostly lovely and I don't have much comments BUT,

 By: skyeriding : July 13th, 2017-03:49
that last haute joaillerie watch made me do a double take. "What is that?!" Wood marquetry to me, is relatively underrated compared to cloisonne dials. Both beautiful and intricate in their own ways. And of course, the 5522 is going to be popular. I wish ...

Yes, they are not the same kind of crafts

By: Mark in Paris : July 16th, 2017-15:26
I must say I like how they used diamond-settings on the ladies minute repeater quite more. On the watch you mention, it is much more very colourful, I would take it like a funny and original watch that would be worn as a "Fantaisie" jewel, not something t...

Thanks for this wonderful comprehensive report

 By: Bruno.M1 : July 13th, 2017-03:51
great to read and fantastic info But still not happy that non US citizens can't order the pilot.

I'm glad you enjoyed it

By: Mark in Paris : July 17th, 2017-13:15
I would have liked to consider a few of them too if it was sold in Europe. Well, as I said to other purists, there will be other opportunities in the future for sure Thank you for your nice comments Bruno! Best, Mark

Fantastic report Mark Thanks

 By: FRAM : July 13th, 2017-06:34
I really like the WT and some of the artisan watches. I can't see the fascination for some of the other ones (like the pilot watch) but we all have different opinions ;-)

I must say that I like the fact they indeed chose the WT complication for a few of the editions unveiled

By: Mark in Paris : July 17th, 2017-13:20
and this really pushes me closer towards available models (5110R, 5230G, 5131R and 5930G). Well, the pilot is not the kind of watches I like in general either but I know that this kind of more casual watches, simple and with a different character from the...

Great report!

The minute repeater world time is sooooo niceeeee. Those lugs are to die for!

Yes it is

By: Mark in Paris : July 17th, 2017-13:22
I love very much its whole case especially. However, together with such dial, the result is simply stunning Thank you! Best, Mark

Mark, as we have come to expect from you, another exceptional photographic essay and analysis of an extraordinary Patek event, focusing on the Limited Edition watches!

 By: patekova : July 13th, 2017-14:29
I had the extreme pleasure of attending this unparalleled and historic event (although the use of the word "event" does not come close to adequately describing the Grand Exhibition). Regarding the Limited Editions, the 5531 MR WT is my absolute favorite, ...

This collection is indeed a good basis for nice talks about Patek watchmaking :)

By: Mark in Paris : July 19th, 2017-08:50
As you say, the "Grand Exhibition" terms are not oversold and I really appreciate what Patek has done to promote fine watchmaking throught this event. During a time when the watch field needs it, they have shown their strengh even more. The number of piec...

Thank you Mark for the wonderful post!!

 By: KC_HK : July 14th, 2017-00:53
My Favorite is definitely the 5531R. "Night" dial matches very well with the RG case. Of course, the "Day" dial has a very stunning persona as well. Then, comes the 2 NY skyline pocket watches! The amazing detail work of the enamel of the pocket watches r...

Watchpro Patek event at Cipriani last evening

 By: vicunaman1 : July 16th, 2017-09:05
A spectacular event; the venue perfect, the PP staff/craftspeople most informing and accommodating; and of course the event limited edition pieces were very special, the historic PP museum pieces, a joy to view in person along with the entire collection. ...

Thank you for the feedback from the Purists event

By: Mark in Paris : July 20th, 2017-10:03
We're starting to have some pictures from it (Padj posted also in the Home section) and it seems to have been a wonderful evening I'm glad you enjoyed it that much, Patek prepared everything very nicely. Best, Mark

I love it too

I feel a lot of talent has been put in this watch, mechanically or aesthetically speaking. It is always nice to be able to admire a watch without any consideration of pricing matters. Just for the pleasure. Thank you Nicolas for sharing your thoughts on t...

The venue is Singapore

This was per interview by Mr T Stern. Currently, allocation of the novelty is the news.

Hi jonrus, which interview are you referring to ?

 By: GLau : July 26th, 2017-17:36
Do you have a link of the article ? Thanks Gordon

At TZ

 By: jonrus : July 26th, 2017-17:52
WM interviewed Mr T Stern, and he was clear that it's Singapore on the article.

Mark, firstly, I apologize for my tardy reply. I've only just now found the time to review your post in the detail it deserves.

 By: 5980 : July 26th, 2017-16:06
Secondly, thank you! A wonderful composition with valuable information. As one of the few who, rather disappointingly, was unable to attend the exhibition, I find this post - and the others like it...thank you all! - very enjoyable. Unfortunately, also a ...
