Let's look at the 5980's list price...
According to my info:
It was 38000 CHF in 2006 Oct
Now its list price is 40300 CHF.
Let's do a simple Math:
40300/38000=> 6% increase.
In your example, it was not the grey dealer helping you.... it was the currency helping you.
I believe you would experience the same (benefit) if you had bought the CHF in 2006 Oct.
Personally, I will not and did not buy from ANYONE (including grey dealer and ADs) with premium. I indeed feel sorry for the people who did.

There would not be any Grey market... This is sad, but true. The only thing you can do is choosing between 2 options: 1/ You badly want the watch and you patiently wait to get it ( It may be long, as in France, for example, you'll have to wait 4 or 5 year...
