Rarity in my watch case, yes. In the greater world, no.
I have one Patek - just one out of my 100 watches. So it's a rare watch in my household. But then I have just one Rolex - that doesn't mean Rolex is rare in the watch universe.
Using the automotive analogy as others have, Porsche 911s are "relatively rare", but Porsche still built 600,000 between 1963-2006, and perhaps half their total production ever is in SoCalif where I live, so they are considered quite common here. But very nice cars. Perhaps the Rolex of sports cars?
On the other hand, Lotus only made 10,000 Esprits between 1976 - 2004, so they are much more rare. But that doesn't an Esprit a "good" car by most peoples' standards. Nor will they last as long as a Porsche. No Lotus will ever win an all-makes concours - they're just not finished well on the insides (I've had 4). But driving fun - now that's something else. Definitely not the Patek of sports cars. Maybe the _______ (fill in your brand of choice).
So back to Patek.
Are they finished well? Yes.
Are they built to last? Yes.
Are they conservatively attractive and tasteful? Generally yes.
Are they made of precious metals? Most of them are.
Are people over-the-long-haul desiring them? Yes.
Are we constantly talking about them? Yes
Are they scarce? Relatively, yes. Compared to a Bugatti Royale (7), no.
Does that impact their desirability? For me, no.
I don't see rarity as an issue for Patek compared to most high-end watches.
If you want it, you can find it. Eventually and at a price. Like many desirable objects.

Pateks are all THAT rare. Watchtime had them at 42,000 pieces a year or so ago. By comparison, JLC made 50,000, but 8,000 of those were Atmos clocks (and there are more JLC models, limiting the actual number of pieces for one metal/dial/band configuration...

The Patek Philippe watch is developed and manufactured to be an exclusive creation. The company's combined production over the past 170 years is less than 1% of the Swiss watchmaking industry's current production in one year. And enthusiasts the world ove...

.. .. smooth way to profit ... not that I have anything against it ... On other hand art have intrinsic characteristic of rarity so if you making objects of artistic value not arguing that Patek doesn't they have to be rare otherwise they'll be Swatch but...
Rarity or exclusivity?
By: johnswatch1 : August 27th, 2011-16:09
Rarity is not important to me, exclusivity however is. There are many, many watches that are far rarer than the majority of Patek's production but they don't have that exclusivity which is largely created by the high price. In my experience very few of th...
I think you're right.

Exclusive is a better descriptive term than rare, particularly for pieces made within the past 20 years or so. And, I think you are right, assuming you have the where with all, almost any piece could be had. Granted, the application process makes the acqu...
5959

Well, I also love the 5959 because it is beautiful, has a lot going on in a very small package, is extremely difficult to build, and is very, very RARE. Rarity is important to me if it's associated with quality, beauty, and the highest craftsmanship. The 5...
