I am new on this forum, but I feel like in the right place to share my love for the PP ref. 3940. I apologize for my english.
I have recently decided to go in depth into PP ref. 3940 writing the article that has been published on collectability . Doing this I have of course based my research on the great work done by ACM and others minor works.
I agree with those of you who put conditions first. And as already told in this topic it is hard to find hallmarks unpolished or light polished, but that is not the only place to look at. Also lugs and other small details that make the difference are important.
I've seen many examples for sale with bad dial and sadly with a fake dial too.
Of course papers are important, and with Patek we are lucky that they offer the Archives Extract which is a precious service.
Series are very important in the collectibility of this reference and as you said first and second series are the most desiderable ones. This is where I would focus my research.
I wish you a good luck to find the right 3940 for you and finally join the owners' club of this amazing watch that is unjustifiably undervaluated.
