Patek Philippe

Ok, crazy thought...

... there's no "downward direction," just occasional models or lines that aren't appealing. The 1990s 5090 "Sculpture" was almost universally hated, few love the 5015, and the 5020 had no fans until auction houses and Hodinkee latched onto it. We don't decry Philippe Stern's 1990s reign of terror or the terminal spiral of Patek because the 1990s also had many tremendous design triumphs and classics.

So does the period since 2009 that Thierry has been running the company. The 5235 was awesome, the 6119 is lovely, and almost everyone agrees the 5811 is a nicely restrained evolution of the 5711; there are many more.

As a person who often encounters brands that won't service watches only 15-25 years old, Patek's recent pledge to service and support every watch and clock back to 1839 is refreshing. The large-scale exhibitions in global markets have been wonderful opportunities for locals to show up unannounced and without pre-clearance to see a huge selection of modern and vintage pieces - for free.

Honestly, even if the Cubitus is a miss - and I'm not a fan - there's a huge catalog and recent back catalog to enjoy. Even the Cubitus might look better with a more balanced dial, enamel, or a bracelet. Patek isn't AP hung up on one sprawling collection of watches or Breguet desperate for  -- any!  -- attention. The company doesn't seem to be for sale like half of the independently owned brands in the industry or in dire financial straights.

Really, the big picture is pretty good for such a large company with such varied offerings.
