In my books 3712 is the Original. It has the two-part-case like Gerald Genta designed his famed Nautilus while 5712 is having the conventional three-part-case. Furthermore, 3712 is a bit slimmer and there are also many other differences. I have listed some of those many times earlier here. If it matters to you, 3712 is quite rare; it was produced less than one year while 5712 is already very common.
If you just want to get one of these watches, get the one that is cheaper. The movement is the same on both watches.
I have a very sentimental attitude towards this issue and I paid a lot more for a new 3712 than what a new 5712 would have costed. When I paid the watch, the difference was huge and I felt a lot of pain. I think it was around 10k in € but I can't remember it anymore. The watch is now paid, I enjoy my 3712 every time it is on my wrist and what feels really great is that I know all those small differences.

3712 is equipped with exhibition case back. However, this watch is opened from the shoulders like the original 3700. Best, Kari
if you can afford, of course...

I would look for something different
I own a 3712, wich I like a lot. It is different in many details and it is the "old" nautilus style. I remember that I paid the same amount then, like you have to pay for a 5711 today! I would go for another style or movement, if I already would call a 57...
