like a sub-40mm Patek Philippe Dress Watch. I don’t unilaterally dislike all “Modern” Patek, but those smaller, subtle timepieces really speak to me. My wrist is 7 3/4” around and I have no problem wearing a 36mm Patek.

The 3919 is a classic and looks terrific, and it's actually better proportioned for the movement that the 5119. Both references are extremely elegant though.
That looks great on your wrist
If you like that size, consider the 5026 as well. 33mm with the classic Calatrava case, but automatic with the 240 movement.
Size actually matters less when one tries a smaller watch

Watches were this size for years
because it is the perfect size. Many people nowadays may prefer 40-42mm dress watches but to me they are really way too big for most people.

You are right, one has to try out before jumping to a conclusion. This watch fits and looks good on your wrist.
