and watches like that look just fine on me. A lot of the larger watches (40mm+) look silly on a lot of people but it isn't polite to say so. Here's a little secret: there are a lot of stunning watches made in the last 40 years that are less than 38mm and are a STEAL.

The 3919 is a classic and looks terrific, and it's actually better proportioned for the movement that the 5119. Both references are extremely elegant though.
That looks great on your wrist
If you like that size, consider the 5026 as well. 33mm with the classic Calatrava case, but automatic with the 240 movement.

Watches were this size for years
because it is the perfect size. Many people nowadays may prefer 40-42mm dress watches but to me they are really way too big for most people.

You are right, one has to try out before jumping to a conclusion. This watch fits and looks good on your wrist.
