Hello, I need advise on 5146G

Nov 18, 2019,06:59 AM

I’ve good collection of 24 watches that I’ll post sometime later for your perusal, my present query is about adding 5146G to join my Patek 5116r.
Please share your opinion on the annual calendar feature. Is it easy to adjust if I wear it once a while or it’s difficult and must be kept on watch winder if not worn regularly.
My another question is regarding its deployant buckle shape; I’ve seen both, a regular one and one with Calatrava cross shape. Which one will you prefer if given a choice.

FWIW my advice

Don't keep on a winder. It's like running the engine in the garage. Easy to set so why 'winder' it. I prefer elegant buckle - lower profile, more elegant.

I agree in toto

I totally am with you sir. I have not bought a winder due to that but till now I have only simple date or day date automatics. This would be my first annual calendar complication therefore I was in doubt. Now I’m clear and won’t use a winder. Regards

If wonders are so bad why do PP provide them

This is a very functional watch.

It's probably pusher-based

Each pusher advances date, moonphase, day of the week, month. Personally I like what Lange has done - a single button advances each indicator TOGETHER. As for the buckle vs. deployant - I would go for deployant, don't see why it would be less secure.

Only make sure it is more than half wound prior to a jump from a 30th to a 1rst

It needs 1/4 of the energy for such a change of the date. Apart from that it is a very solid and reliable calendar module (uses only wheels and no springs or bars). A classic Patek!

The COUNT is the Best... always good advice from the COUNT

That’s another beauty indeed

Since I’m now approaching 58 years 5146 offers me a better legibility to read day and month apart from giving an advantage of lumed hands. It also have reserve deMarche function.

Let me add..

My opinion on buckle or deployant is YMMV. Your mileage may vary. It really depends on the wrist. Some people on the forum have said they don’t like it. Mine deployant fits great for me. Also I think the curve to the clasp may have changed over the years....

Thanks

So you’re using a double Calatrava cross deployant or a normal one? I’ve ordered for a double Calatrava cross one. I normally wear my watches with care and do take care of leather straps as well. I also clean them with a good leather cleaner cream once a ...

Good move

 By: Burt : December 6th, 2019-19:14
You will enjoy it very much. For me the watch winder is a must. I use my 5146 on an off every few days. My favorite watch. Setting it over and over would be tiresome. The wearing it out issue is in the the realm of “you only live once”. I know that will n...

I agree with you Burt.

And I'll add that a watch designed to require adjustment only once a year is more than up to running continuously. I'm not 100% certain, but frequent setting using the stylus may even create more premature wear than if the 5146 is left running as intended...

I saw a YouTube tutorial for 5146 and it suggested ideal setting time between 2 pm to 6 pm. According to that date, day wheels are in change mode between 8 pm to 2 am and moon phase during 9 am to 12 noon, so we better avoid that period.

 By: Pun : December 6th, 2019-19:39
It also asserted that one must follow the following steps. First the time should be set between 2-6 pm, then month, date, day and moon phase setting be followed in that order. One should set them for a day earlier and then correct time with moving hands t...

A very reliable and great looking piece.

While I like the look of the Calatrava Cross, I prefer the buckle as I find the simple fold over clasp less than secure and not particularly comfortable. I don't understand why Patek does not use the double butterfly clasp exclusively like on all Nautilus...
