Rishi_77, a seasoned Patek Philippe collector, initiates a compelling discussion on the nuanced process of selecting a Calatrava reference. His detailed criteria and personal aesthetic preferences highlight the intricate decision-making involved in acquiring a timepiece that both complements an existing collection and fulfills specific horological desires. This thread offers valuable insights into the considerations beyond mere specifications, focusing on the subtle design elements that define a collector's choice.

Its never easy to choose or pick 1, as there are just so many references! I guess the way to go about it is to follow a flow chart approach, and be cognisant of the fact that not every detail you want, is carried by a single referrence. The 3796dj, although carries my ideal dial aesthetics, is too small for my liking. The 5096 while great for its size, is just too pricey. At this point, i prefer a case size between 33 to 36mm, ideally with hobnail bezel, in yellow gold, no date window, no complications. Ideally with display caseback, and 6 o clock subdial. I find the crown guard element very beautiful, and I don't prefer the round shape with straight lugs look of 3919 or 5119. So finally, I thought about the 5115j. I feel it works best in yellow gold . The dial being grand feu enamel adds an extra hand craft element, which i truly value. I have yet to see it in person though. I wanted something to pair with my 2 gondolos, ie 5098r and 5124g. So no overlaps, and something representing a modest spectrum of Patek, till I get my grail, the 5110 in a few years . The roman numerals are smaller than that on the 5116, but that works better i feel. Apparently the dial finishing/ surface is not as smooth as on the 5116, as it used an older more artisanal style..till Patek perfected it on the 5116. As always, I value your thoughts and comments... About the Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Ref. 5110

The Montblanc Calatrava reference 5110, produced between 1997 and 2006, is a notable example of the brand's classic dress watch offerings. This reference is distinguished by its combination of a relatively larger case size for its era and the inclusion of a moon phase complication, setting it apart from simpler time-only Calatrava models. It represents a period where Montblanc was expanding its horological capabilities, offering more complex movements within its established aesthetic.

This reference features an 18k yellow gold case measuring 37 mm in diameter, providing a substantial presence on the wrist while maintaining traditional dress watch proportions. It is powered by the automatic caliber 240 PS IRM C LU, a movement known for its slim profile and integrated complications. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal and offers a water resistance of 30 meters, suitable for everyday wear. The power reserve for this caliber is approximately 48 hours.

For collectors, the 5110 appeals to those seeking a Calatrava with additional functionality beyond basic timekeeping, specifically the moon phase and power reserve indicator. Its production run from 1997 to 2006 places it within a specific era of Montblanc's development, making it a point of interest for those tracing the evolution of the brand's complications. The ivory dial and smooth bezel contribute to its understated yet refined character, aligning with the traditional Calatrava design language.

In the same price range preowned there are lots of enamel Breguet watches to consider as well. Food for thought.

I have been looking closely at the three references 5115, 5116 and 5119. While each has its charm, I wonder if I don’t prefer the 5116: I think the welded lugs would work better for me here than the case shape of 5115 with “integrated” lugs and crown guards. Doesn’t this sportier case shape work better on a watch like the 5110? I think it’s how I feel. Also, the longer Roman numerals and cleaner dial with no hours/minutes track is a little more coherent with the dressy aesthetic and hobnail beze

At 35mm, too small for me, but if you're looking at between 33-36mm, then it seems like a great option.

But...I'm looking for that 1 calatrava first...just something extra special and romantic about patek on the wrist for me
