„Why not discontinue what clients don't want and not the most popular model!”
Well, I'm just a small watch collector and work in a completely different segment (IT).
So there are certainly more qualified people to explain the background to us.
I deal with watches out of pure passion and „joie de vivre“, and because of my entrepreneurship I have a … certain amount of experience of how economically strategic thinking COULD work.
I personally think, as I wrote in my first reply to the OP, it has also something to do with Patek’s goal to increase the company value (perhaps in order to sell it?).
1. There is an enormous hype, and Patek-interested consumers see once again what a good investment a Patek is.
2. The consumer becomes unsettled by the discontinuation of production even of successful models. This behavior of the manufacturer demonstrates that a production stop could affect every reference, no matter how successful it is, and this encourages the interested consumer not to wait and so buy / pull the trigger even if in slight doubt. It would always be a good investment at least.
In doing so, this and the rising prices also encourages the sale of less attractive models or at least accelerates the buying behavior of potential buyers who may have already made their decision but wanted to wait a little longer or who are not 100 percent sure about a certain watch but justify their purchase to themselves by thinking that it is at least a good investment for sure.
Just my 2c.
Best
