Can someone with more watchmaking expertise explain to me…

 

…why is it that much harder to do a rectangular movement?  Assuming the rectangle is larger than the original circular movement, could you not just make a larger rectangular baseplate but have all the gears and pinions in the same places as on the circular movement?  So no re-engineering involved, just some dead space on the larger plate?
