Watch Collecting is a very strange phenomenon. Thank you for the kind words on the 5970. I have to say that for me and my watch collecting career yes my 5970g with Salmon dial is the closest watch to perfection I've ever set eyes on. I loved the 5970 from the moment I set eyes on it hence bought a R&P and having first seen a Salmon dial on Mr Stern Snr wrist years ago I longed for a Salmon dial Patek ever since. So you can imagine my blood pressure when I saw that 5970g with that perfect dial and strap combination at the Saatchi Exhibition in London. I feel so privileged to of been allowed to own such a watch.
Without boring you though let me tell you a bit about my watch collecting experience over more than 20 years. I hope this will be helpful to younger or new collectors as I truly believe it's helped me over the years.
I have always only allowed my eyes and heart to judge what watches I have purchased over the last 20 years. I have always been drawn to complicated watches as apposed to simple tool watches. I have been in a position over these years to of bought some of the most rare and valuable watches in the world but have not done so. I have only ever bought watches that set my eyes and heart on fire and have never bought a watch just for what it was or the investment potential. This is not because I am a very wealthy man and the money would not help me now because it would this is because I can honestly say that every watch I have ever bought and owned I loved and each purchase and chase of these watches was an emotional love affair and adventure and every single watch pleased my eyes and heart and only this. I can be criticised for not having such a great depth of knowledge about movements but dials make me tick as they are what I see first and spark my love affairs.
I know there are "Collectors" out there with very deep pockets who have established very large collections and have every possible variation of many models I also know that they cannot possibly get from their collections what I have from mine over the years and do not feel the same way about all their watches as I do about every single one of mine. For this I actually pity some of them not envy as one would expect.
so I hope I haven't bored you but the message I am trying to get across to maybe new or young members here and one that dealers do not want you to hear is this....If you want to get a great deal of pleasure and contentment from your hobby always go with your gut first impression of a watch and let your eyes and heart do the choosing for you..... Not your dealer or the financial advisor in you or what you see is a "Grail" watch...... Had I of done this I would now have a big collection of very rare very valuable watches that didn't make my heart and eyes sing and that would of been sad.
Hope you are not all asleep just an opinion from a collector who has a modest collection of very loved watches and how he got there.
All wear, stare and love your watches in good health.
Miles.
