A „long term comparision“ - 5170g vs 5170p vs 5172g
What‘s better to do on a sunday morning, than spending time with one‘s favorite hobbies. I‘ve seen questions regarding the comparision of these timepieces from time to time, so I thought I might write down my experiences after spending a longer time with all three of them (worn the 5172g for a couple weeks). 
These watches are much closer on paper, than in real life. A year ago I thought myself that owning all three of them wouldn‘t make much sense. But they are very different in character. When choosing my „watch of the day“ now, these three are not competing with each other, but with other watches in my collection. Needless to say that I love hand wound chronographs. In chronological order:
The 5170g is the understated and laid-back mature man of the three. Spending the whole evening in a great bar while smoking cigars, drinking whisky and having philosophical conversations with good old friends? Going to a serious business meeting and want to be in a calm mood for it? This is the choice.
The 5170p is the sharp, strong and elegant „alpha male“. In today‘s business meeting you don‘t want to be calm, you want to be aggressive. And in the evening you‘re going to a big party. You want something with wrist presence, without being too much in your face. A shimmering, yet dark blue dial. Diamonds on the dial, yes. But most people wouldn‘t recognize them as diamonds. It might be the boldest of the three, but there‘s still some mystery coming with it.
The 5172g is the casual and fun daily wearer. There‘s no business meeting today. It might even be a sunday. You‘re going to have a fun lunch with your family. When looking at your wrist, you‘re being reminded to not always take life too serious. It‘s about the nice and fun things. Just smile.
If you think about getting one of these and two or all of them are on your final shortlist, choose the character you want. Don’t try to find the „most beautiful“ one. They all look great in their own way. 5170p and 5172g are not similar just because they both have blue dials. 5170g and 5170p are not similar just because they‘re both 5170s.

Actually it’s more that I love the VC Cornes de Vache so much
I think the 5170 to be executed very well, but I would have liked a bit more personality. However, I understand this is also a quality (being understated), especially for the 5170g. You described it very well.
The VC Cornes de Vache is also a great chrono. I've tried one on in the past. I didn't buy it, because it was slightly too small for me, being almost 2m tall.
But I can see why one would choose the VC CdV over the 5170g.

Thank you, ZSHSZ. I agree with you. The 5170g is, if it matches your character and style, the most versatile of the three. And it's a very nice exit watch.
You could wear it with the most outfits and to the most different occasions. The 5170P is imho the "hardest" to match. There are still plenty of occasions to wear it, but it's not a as good as a daily wearer.

As for the watches, 5172G is my choice too, cool refined and sophisticated at the same time, strong presence without show off, I love it
Yes, I also think, that the 5172g is more refined. But some edges can be good for the long term interest in a watch. A very refined design can possibly become boring at some point in time.
I wonder, what I'll think about them in a few years.

I usually don't have several watches of the same type and if so, they are less different in character.
Not owning any of these, but being somewhat facials with them, I think your assessment is perfect.
I’m a longtime fan of the 5170G. When one looks at the G and P together they are such different watches, dial colour yes, but also dial layout, sub dials etc. And of course those diamond markers. I can completely understand why owning both makes perfect s...
Of these, the 5172...
...it would be a tougher choice if there were leaf hands involved...

Your observations are spot on. Of the three the 5172 does have slightly more appeal, as it’s a formidable piece yet doesn’t take itself too seriously.

P or G is definitely not an easy choice, I wouldn‘t know, which one I‘d sell first, if I had to. On the other hand, if I‘d only have one and could only have one, I‘d probably stick ith the one I already have until I‘m completely sure I wanted to change. ...
