3940G-025 (roman) dial change to 3940G-013 (classic) - Value impact

Apr 22, 2024,08:00 AM

Hi All,

I have been searching for a Patek ref 3940G for more than 2 years now and have just viewed one full set, mint, late third series (2006) from a friend of a friend who is selling it.
While the watch is currently showcasing the "classic" 3940G-013 dial like this one : images.app.goo.gl , the watch and papers originally state that the ref is a 3940G-025 (https://images.app.goo.gl/kR9BsQkKWArEwk8y7) with roman numerals. The dial change has been done by Patek itself, and as always, they kept the original dial when making the change.

My question is: while the watch is in perfect condition and that the dial has been changed by Patek itself, which kind of value impact (if any) should be expected on this one ?
Not here to flip the watch but to wear it, but keen on making an educated purchase!

Many thanks for your answers !

Paul

Interesting question.

The basic question to ask yourself is how much the "non original" is going to affect your joy and bonding with the watch?. Based on the fact that Patek will not issue an extract for a watch that is not exactly registered in its full configuration: As the ...

Thank you for your answer. But what would be the point of having an extract from the archives knowing that the watch currently holds all papers ? As it would never state the the watch "turned into" a 3940G-013 ?

I've checked on PP website and they mention the following: "If a modification was performed by Patek Philippe and recorded in our journals, the Extract from the Archives will describe the state of the watch when it first left our workshops, as well as the...

I'm looking from a collector perspective.

The extract, or lack of it, is a "deal breaker" for me. The extract proves that the configuration is correct and executed by Patek. Having it, or ability to get it, is a green light to move forward with the transaction. ... Now, lets talk value. The "gold...

Yup, thanks a lot. So anything below 60k would qualify as a fair deal I'd say right ?

Not exactly

80 and 60 were just figures to use as an example. I'd study the market carefully for these specific variants to get a real idea of prices.

Understood !

Is the original dial included with the sale?

I’m pretty sure when Patek agrees to change a dial at a customers request, they return the original dial to the requester. If it comes with the original I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it. Good luck!

Nope, Patek was not giving back the original dial (that is the common process)

What about the hands ? They seem different from one version to other, which hands does this "modified" version have ? Even if I tend to prefer the classic dial, I would not be fully convinced by a modified version even if done by PP themselves...

Only impression is that if you actually ask, this means something to you ! But this is just my personal opinion, I am not the one buying it ! Good luck in your choice, as it is such a remarkable watch.

Hands were indeed modified too ! This dial/hands combination is EXACTLY what I want. Yet, I'm concerned about the value of the watch itself if I resell it in some time. Best, ...

Glad to hear that you found exactly what you wanted ! :-)

To me, given authenticity is proven, the issue on relative value is whether this configuration is desirable to many others (i.e. same taste as you) in the future. Since you will not have the original dial and hands for the next owner to restore it back, I...

I have always loved the left dial (Romans)...

...but am not a fan of flipping the IV and the VIII.
