Thank you for your post. I always find your posts both interesting and well reasoned and since you are a former AD you bring a unique and valuable perspective.
For whatever its worth (or not) here is my take on 3940 versus 3450. 3940 is a fantastic watch, perfect in every way BUT with approximately 10,000 made (more or less), a case that is smallish by today's standards and housing a movement that appears in thousands of other watches (5040, 5038, 5140, 5940, etc) it is far from rare. For many collectors (especially younger ones) it is too readily available, somewhat bland and dated. Personally, I think it is perfect, but ...
Compare that to 3450, made in only 244 examples. It has a chunky large case in line with today's taste, a design and movement unique to itself and its sister 3448. While sometimes compared to 2497 (a comparison I don't see), that is not a bad watch to which to be compared.
