Tudor Baselworld 2014, the new Bomb: Heritage Ranger!

I always loved the Tudor Ranger, which is a kind of Rolex Explorer Sister.

And most of all the first one.

Tudor, this year, did it again, and decided to re visit this classic in a faithful way.

Case: 41 mm. Stainless Steel.

Movement: ETA 2824, Automatic, 28 800 vibrations per hour, 38 hours power reserve

Offered with two straps, one leather " Bund ", another Nylon Nato.

A clear winner, in my book.

I have the serious feeling that it will become a new Community Watch...

I like it too. Classic, sober, and somber.

And in the 2,000 Euro price range.

With some really nice details; high relief crown, beautifully stitched leather strap and a Camo woven strap.

However, on the bracelet version there's one detail they missed! The area where the bracelet meets the lugs/case is missing the end-link cover. Wished they had an end link cover to cover the gap between the bracelet and case.

If there is a bracelet version, which I ignore...

You can clearly see that they need to develop suitable end links for the bracelet version. But you're right, I would do just fine with the calf strap version and the nylon strap; and the buckle on both leather strap versions are identical; so you can own both strap and use the same buckle.

I like this watch a lot. A win for Tudor! The bracelet version's lack of end links is not a big deal, because I'm happy wearing the strap versions anyways.

Bracelet? If it is only 3 or 400 euros, it may well be a worthy alternative, if it much more I guess thety won't sell too many with the bracelet...

It comes with either a bund style strap option, or a bracelet, and both options come with the extra camo fabric style strap. Price differential I hear is CHF 100.00.

But considering the Tudor Heritage Black Bay came in two variants; a leather strap model with a deployant clasp or a bracelet model (a nylon strap was included with both models) and that both of the models retailed in the United States at the same price, I would believe that it is highly possible the Ranger would have no difference in price among all the three variants. Like the Black Bay model, the Nato-like strap will be included regardless of the model.

How about a nice cordovan shell strap to go with yours?

Only thing I wish it had was a thicker bezel. Bezel is too thin for my liking. Overall it's a job well done! Tudor knows what the collectors want. Unfortunately I find most of these modern remakes a bit too chunky. If there was more moderation in the updating of size, would be fantastic.

and a bit hit for Tudor.

I spent quite some time in Basel talking to the Tudor team, including the designer.

The watch is a product of Tudor listening to and learning from their heritage and the vintage collector community.

They are very clear that the watches are not meant to be exact replicas, but taking the best from the different watches in a reference's history.

The Heritage Ranger has some very cool details. Drilled lugs - this was a big move for them. Hand painted numerals, with patina. The bracelet without endlinks is a very important part of the Rolex and Tudor bracelet history and I think it's one of the coolest aspects of the release.

The detail that Davide and the team go into with these Heritage releases is phenomenal! The construction of the camo NATO is stunning - no printing, all individual layers of weaving.

Tudor are committed to this for the long haul and I think they will continue to impress.

For one tenth of the price of this Tudor, you could get a Hamilton Khaki..... is that such an inferior watch? I understand that Tudor are trying to provide inspiration to the heritage theme, but I am not sure this is doing it for me. If you make a theme of trying to capture the heritage spirit, then it needs to have something that adds some chutzpah to the game. Take the new Rolex GMT. The cerachrom bezel alongside the white gold makes that watch truly special. It is not just a rehash of the past. This year, Rolex provided us with more bang for the buck on heritage than Tudor. If Tudor are making their raison d'être the heritage theme, then for me it has to be more special than this. This Ranger is not a cheap watch really for what it is.

Sorry to be a naysayer here, but for me, this year's efforts were ....uhhhhhmmmm.

The plastic Hamilton maybe, certainly not the ss one. ;)

Well, at this price, in the modern world, you don't have too many nice watches, or at least, interesting ones.

The Longines Legend Diver was even cheaper, 6 years ago, but it was 6 years ago ( 1400 Euros ).

This Watch has zero pretention.

I do get your point on the Rolex offer, but this year, you have the choice among 3, maybe 4.

And among these 3 or 4, I see only one, the WG GMT... But at this price, you can get a super fine Chronograph...

That is the main problem of this Watch. For the rest, suepr desirable, I totally agree.
