Rolex

I was very lucky...my first ever Rolex was bought by a good friend. It was also his "first ever" Rolex. We were discussing this and he came around to an idea....I would buy back half the watch...and we would share the Rolex...1yr for him and the next year for me!!

Just curious what was first....

Was this Air King. On the mintiest 6635 rivet bracelet with quite an unusual dial. I still own this watch and it would be the last to leave me!





You are correct on the GMT theory though. My first sports model was a 16700 GMT and I know a lot of guys who started with a GMT too!

my Rolex Sub TT Blue from an AD in 2001.  I stll own it, wear it frequently and just had it's first service.  I couldn't stop at one, so also have a Milgauss GV and the Maxidial GMT IIC.  I'm wearing the GMT now. 

Who knew?  I never thought I'd ever need more than one watch, let alone three Rolex!

But it gave me the GMT Bug... Which is a serious one, as I now have 5 Vintage GMTs.

One day, I will add a modern GMT. I even think that it will be a 116710.

As for your observation, yes, I think we are many to have started with a Rolex GMT!

......... a 1655 bought from an Official Rolex Dealer here in Italy when I was 18 .......... traded after a couple of years for a 1665. ;-)

When I turned 18, my mother gave me a GMT, that was in 1992. I still have the watch.

...was a Milgauss.  It wasn't my first watch. Bought mainly because it's the lease Rolex looking of the Rolexes IMO, and that's important for me as I don't want to get unwanted attention for the watches I wear.

I have real trouble letting go.

This one lived on my wrist for 17 years.

I don´t want to get boring repeating the story of my first Rolex, which I told several times here, but... It was a gilt 5513 from 1966, presented by my parents in that year for my 18th birthday, and complimenting an old dream I had since I was a child.

Regretably that watch was stolen during an armed robbery I suffered in 1977, and my watch was replaced by a reference 1680 my wife presented me a few days later, to try to make me feel better after that loss.
I still have this 1680 with me, and I cherish it so much.

I had that 5513 and then the 1680 for many decades as my only watch, and used day and night,seven days a week, at work, vacations, sport scuba diving, etc., till I engaged in watch collecting some 5  or 6 years ago.
Submariners have been my favorite watches, till I discovered the passion for collecting.

... unfortunately I sold it after 3 months.  It was a daily wear watch, and I just could not fuction without the date.  It started to annoy me to no end.  The good thing is that I sold it to fund a 16600 Sea-Dweller, which has basically been on my wrist ever since (besides the days when the 1665 gets some wrist time). 

I have had that Sea-Dweller for almost 4 yrs and I have built a ton of memories with it - surfing, swimming, sister's wedding, receiving military awards, engagement to my fiancee, etc.  It even spent a year on my father's wrist while I was deployed to Afghanistan.  This 16600 is a tank and going nowhere.

My father bought this Explorer 1016 in 1964 and gave it to me in 1984 when I was 15. I did all things you can do to a watch and it will never be just a watch but part of my history.

The watch did a lot to me: it made me understand quality, love luxury, gilt dials and the Rolex brand. So I guess it has been quite important to me!

I sure it will be passed down for generations.

I was wondering what the date on the gurantee is.  Not the hand written one but the one printed on the guarantee it self.  I suspect 1962 / 3 but I am just curios.  I have seen guarantee with dates that are 3 or 4 years earlier than the sale date because there were not tied to the watch but issued at the point / date of sale.

The date on the chronometer certificate is May 9, 1963 and the sale date is December 22, 1964. I will check whether there is a separate date on the warranty papers but they are in the bank.

The guarantee was issued at sale.  I think two three or four years difference on the sale date and the printed date is perfectly normal.
