Philippe Starck Designed Motor yacht "A" at $300 Million
The boat "A", was designed by Philippe Starck and completed in mid-2008 for more than $300 million yacht A for Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko.
Built by Blohm+ Voss motor yacht A is 119 meters long and with twin, high-speed diesel engines deliver 24,000 horsepower and push the 5,959-gross-ton ship to 24 knots. "A" has a crew of between 35 to 37 people all of the crew wear Starck-designed uniforms. The boat costs over $20 million a year to maintain; Filling the gas tank costs more than $500,000.
Reminiscent of a submarine warship the mega yacht's name is a tribute to Andrey Melnichenko and his wife Serbian fashion model Aleksandra Nikolic.

Can't say I love Philippe Starck's designs...
In general, I can't say that I like Philippe Starck's designs. There is a hotel in Southern California called the "SLS Hotel" that was designed by Philippe Starck. It is a very unique and fun hotel, but it has a bit of a nightmare-ish and Alice in Wonderland feel to it. It's definitely fun, young, and hip, but I imagine that it would grow old after a few days.

There was also a very strong security requirement from the owners so it is also a fortress on water.

...the main PITA with firearms on board a ship is that most places will demand that you declare and secure them at port. Some jurisdictions won't allow certain weapons within their waters.
Not a problem if you're Mr Gazillionaire, your minders can work all that out while you traipse about....
Either that or stay away from the Gulf of Aden....

The styling just doesn't seem to gel on the water. Which may, as you say, be the attention-attracting point of it...

not an easy task when you get the job to design a boat for 300 M...
the client wants people to notice it and there goes the golden rules of aesthetism...
So this mix from submariner, ice breaker and James Bond invention might not be ...subtle.
I must confess that I am a fan of Philippe Starck... but not only.
Now what would a boat for the same client by Konstantin Grcic or Jonathan Ive... or Marc Newson look like.
We know how the fantastic Wally's from Luca Bassani Antivari look like and I am happy to see finally a bit of creativity in the traditional field of exclusive boat and yacht design.
