Ulysse Nardin

I will ALWAYS wish that DEEP in the hearts of people, they are buying and spending hard earned money, they get to enjoy the fruits of their labours.

Else, buy shares on some market.

But..we live in a time when the man/machine interface is closing each hour across labs all over the world.

Something from the past, a music box...and a tune that I love , in fact.....I love BOTH available tunes.

A music box watch has been done before.

BUT...as I own several...I can say that THIS Ulysse Nardin is one of the company's MOST beautiful pieces EVER.

And trust me...it is because it plays a tune, using a musical disc, and that the lines and waves that stretch across the body...you will wish that I am right.

That owning this, and wearing it, using it....will make this piece uniquely of great value...the more you wear it.

As an audiophile nut, music boxes will mellow as you use the tines often...and each person will trigger the watch in a unique way.

I ramble.

I am mad.

BUT...in 2002..I did tell you to buy the Freak, in 2003, the Opus 3, in 2005, the Opus V.

I don't bat even 10 out of 100.

BUT..I will say this.

TEN fingers..not 8 with 2 thumbs!

Ten fingers reaching into the HEART.

REACHING into the heart to play a tune from the heart. I may sound soppy...but watchmaking is NOT always about movements and finish..although this one is not at all a walk in the park...and it is an obvious example of GREAT WORK.

I will own this watch, buy it with my own money. Give it to my wife.

Err..sorry...I will wear it myself.

I am sure UN will launch different tunes later..and trusting the people...they will be relevant to many who lived thru the 70s as adults.

It is the first time for several years that I am completely devastated of joy, happiness, and excitement for a UN novelty.

Just one reserve, though... Whitout such a simple date, which looks cheap in such a marvellous environment, it would have been even nicer. Nicer than nicer.

Any idea of the retail? Same than a Sonata, less, more?

I also wonder if it would be nicer if the music movement (disc etc) was hidden. And if you want something fancy, that you could put automatons in there to reflect the music title like how it plays out in a Hour Striker.

Having said all that, this is an amazing piece. Marrying a music box and a watch is quite an inspired move.

i have to say that while wearing a watch increases its value to the individual who wears it, the value to everyone else, i.e., the market goes down precisely because the more it is on your wrist, the more it becomes simply yours and the possibility of it becoming someone else's diminishes.  of course, if we can polish all the personality out of it, and get a brand new strap that shows no evidence of having ever been anyone else's, then it becomes more marketable because it is somehow less personal.

I have been waiting for UN creativity to return. 

Especially since I am a Sinatra fan.  If they made it with the tune to Come Fly With Me or My Way would be the icing on the cake!

Unfortunately, another 'too weird' for me watch. But I really am struck with stupefied admiration.

" The melody “Strangers in the Night” can be heard hourly or on call by actuating a pusher. Several different functions can be set by means of the integral pusher crown including winding, advancing or retarding the date and correcting the time. To do so, the crown is simply turned forwards or backwards. The on/off pusher which enables the musical mechanism to be activated or deactivated is located at 10 o’clock. This enables the melody to be programmed to play on the hour or not at all. “Stranger” is being made in a limited numbered edition of 99 pieces in rose gold. ".

Five things which seem to be interesting:

- Activation of the muscial mechanism by an off / on pusher.

- The melody can be played on the hour, or not.

- It is a LE of 99 pieces in Rose Gold only. So the white metal fans will certainly have to wait.

- This is a 45 mm case.

- The Cal is the UN-690, with an escapement, anchor and balance srping made of silicium.

I agree, it is nice to see UN give us this sort of original excitement.  We have been waiting several years now, IMO.  Perhaps we were spoiled when these sorts of amazing creations were coming out a bit more frequently.

This year makes me think about this " golden era ".

....I do prefer this iteration where the drum is on the front and where we can actuall see the drum and blades at work though.

But I ave only heard and read of one tune being available to start with?

There were actually at least two "precedents":

it is a very interesting interpretation and seems to be very simple for such a complication.

Can't wait to hear it in person.
