Questions

By: Le Monde Edmond : June 16th, 2014-13:33
Firstly you show some nice watches in your collection. No doubt about that.
But you have not answered any questions that have been asked so far.
And some of the questions would indeed provide more insight for us to be able to help you.
For example:

1) I also would like to know why some remain in plastic.
2) Also your statement of building up a collection in months
seems a little odd to me. Why the rush? In my experience and that of others I believe collections are built up over years (sometimes a lifetime) and not months.

We look forward to hearing more from you.

1) I also would like to know why some remain in plastic.

Some of the models in my collection were only recently purchased from other collectors and I did not see the need to remove the plastic seal if it comes with it. When my professional photographer photographs my watches the seal will be off and I will re-post again.

2) Also your statement of building up a collection in months seems a little odd to me. Why the rush? In my experience and that of others I believe collections are built up over years (sometimes a lifetime) and not months.

This question is very subjective.....if you have a limited budget then collections will have to be built up over the years.....my case is exactly the opposite. Hesitated to answer this question at first and I think some of you will understand why by now.

I am only sharing my collection in this forum as I can see most of you share the same joy, passion and appreciation for fine time pieces as me. Let's just have fun dudes!=)

Dear Jeff,

Firstly thank you for responding to the questions.

As your answer I don't quite agree with you. Building a collection has nothing to do with 'monetary' value or means.
Rather it has to do with knowledge. And that knowledge is only acquired over many many years.
To be honest I have a hard time believing that this is indeed your collection. Not because of the amount of watches
and also not because some of the watches are of a certain value but more because I find it HIGHLY unlikely
that a collector would collect the oversized and flamboyant offshore models and also collect fine
Patek complications. That is too much of a mismatch.

Also your response of Patek vs Audemars demonstrates that your collection is more sophisticated than your knowledge.

So until you provide us with pictures of the watches on your wrist and the articles, please forgive me for being
sceptical and assuming that you are indeed just 'having fun dude' and that your playing around with us.

Knowledge

 By: cwyjeff : June 19th, 2014-03:18

I admit I am lacking in knowledge and did not ever once mention I am some sort of expert on watches. But I do have the passion and it is what drives me to collect my watches. I want to learn more and that is why I am here in hope that I can obtain more knowledge and gain more experience through everybody else's past experiences. More help instead of criticism would be helpful though.

If indeed this is true....

.... that you have the opposite problem (namely, more money than you know what to do with and a desire to spend it on the best) here is my advice: search for the very best. The hunt is fun. And by simply buying newly made pieces and opening your checkbook every time, it is more of a spending spree and not a hunt. Yes, a Patek repeater is a grail and you have just bought or are about to buy many modern ones (5079, 5074, 5207, 6102, 5016). But how about going on the hunt for a 1518 in steel? How about being the buyer of the titanium repeaters recently sold? You have the resources and time to really go for the great ones, to have a personal museum, and yet you are buying all modern pieces. Seems strange to me.

My advice is to study, learn, and go for truly historic pieces, not just expensive ones.

Good suggestion! [nt]

If you bought all these in such short time

Personally I would rather pool all the money and buy a really top end piece.

Ehm...not so well done, sorry

I am aware that some of the valued forum members with considerably more experience and expertise on watches will slap me but...sorry, I can't help but disagreeing with the comments here.
Having acquired half a dozen of time pieces of arguably the most prestigious watch brand after only a few months, well, this looks rather like an indiscriminate shopping spree without idea, aspiration or appreciation. If you ask for our advice, well my advice is to stop it and spend your excess cash pool into more meaningful purposes.

Diplomacy

I agree in principle with you. In fact the same thoughts crossed my mind.
But lets keep back judgement before we hear more from the collector.
Maybe he inherited many pieces and only bought 1 or 2. Maybe
he studied and did his homework for years before buying in a short time span.

Lets wait for his answers.

Fair point....

...indeed. Thanks for your comment. Maybe I am entirely wrong.
