Patek Philippe

A little visit at the local AD and looking at some Patek pieces leaves me wondering: Although these watches are absolutely adorable from a horological standpoint, how many people buy these watches actually to wear them? We are in the year 2020 and although I am able to admire historic design, I would not really love to pull off “grandfather style” on the wrist. Probably I am not the target group - still, I hope that pieces like the 6007A continue to come and will bring Patek a little closer to modern wearability (as opposed to “safe queenability”)

I would love to wear any of these as a daily. The classic beauty of Breguet numbers will never go out of style and I also quite like the lumed numbers of the 5320.

Wearability might be subject to different angles.

From styling point of view, any of these watches maybe called “grandfather style” by one person and “goes with jeans” for another person. Which is a basic principle that applies to almost any luxury item. Take the 5320 as an example: in rose gold its more grandfather style, in white gold or pt more jeans style.
In my view: most of these can go either way whatever the owner likes

Collecting: from a collecting point of view: all of these can probably be daily wearers. Putting them in a safe so no scratches to bet on future values: the watches displayed are great but there have been too many produced to see 15-50% increase per annum

Admiring: thats something else again. If you buy the 5320 because you really admire it, then you want to keep it neat so probably wear it with special occasions only.

Its nice to read that all responses state that they bought a watch to wear it or admire it. No traders.

Personally I do the same (yet with another brand not PP): I’ve got daily wearers, and some pieces that I like so much to view that I don’t wears them often. But do admire them.

Great to see and almost relieving that these watches really see the skin of wrists in real life. So Patek seems to deeply know and understand why they produce this special kind of “Patek style” watches. I guess it all comes down to personal design preference, which thankfully seems to be as diverse and vibrant as the watch lover’s world.

Watches give you terrible ROI, especially compared to stocks and real estate. Too many factors goes into what can be valuable 5-10-20 years down the line + uneven supply.

that the classic Patek look will always have a huge fan base.  The watches on display may be classified by Patek as Grand Complications but they are not overly large or thick that they cannot be worn on a daily basis. Now, if it was the Grandmaster Chime, then, I would understand your question as not only is that a priceless watch but it is also over 47mm and quite thick so a lot less wearable on a daily basis.

They look classic, but often times too classic for me.

And as other friends above have said, I think these are precisely the Pateks that will never become the "safe queens" in a collection, given their poor resale value. They are just there to be fully enjoyed by the enthusiasts (and there are many!) who love these classical, timeless references ;-) Cheers.

I only own the 5320. It’s been my daily watch since I bought it from a Patek Philippe AD more than 15 months ago. In my opinion, the 5320 is a perfect every day watch for someone who enjoys that particular ( vintage inspired)  feeling from Patek. It’s a great timepiece and I really enjoy it.

I wore my #5020 exclusively for two years plus.  It went everywhere with me, to work,

venture to say, put a colorful strap on any of the other 5 watches and the effect will be similar. A strap can make all the difference - conservative to youthful or visa versa. Interesting subject. Thanks for posting. Best, Patekova 

Job pretty well with a mild inconvenience once a year and there is no ways you can justify the significant premium for the inconvenience.Then you realize that this is when watches are tryout mechanical master pieces and you buy it for that reason...and before you know it you start looking for interesting complications etc.. If you buy a watch purely for its functional use then I think you are missing the point and should rather stick to agshock or phone which is a lot more accurate and cheaper.....if you want to move away from the mass production if the day where everything is cheap and disposable and follow a more artisanal route (whether it be supporting your local farmer, small corner shop), cheese maker, tailor or whatever...then these mechanical marvels are the way to go

didn’t buy 39 mm dress watches. All of these models reflect the oversize trend, which Patek also follows for their classical designs and complications unfortunately on the sacrifice of offering traditionel sized alternatives in the product line for men (let’s say 33-36 mm). Grandpa turns his grave.

and I am among the "young" audience considering the average PP consumer's age. Patek is idealisticaly betting on men dressing up and keeping standards a little higher than the average iWatch guy.

I have the 5496P-001, the dates are not raised and no bi-color dual/markers. This is one of my daily watches, along with a 5960/1A that I have changed to a strap.
