Thanks for sharing the story behind such a great watch.
I also have a gold capped (plated) vintage Omega left to me when my Dad died. It is a 1966 Seamaster 30 that my Mum gave him for their wedding. Similarly to yourself, my parents were not wealthy people when they married, especially as it was early in their professional careers. The fact that my Mum had the taste and style to chose such a nice watch means a lot to me as does the fact that my Dad treasured it. 
As you point out there are more important things in life than money.

I have a brown matt like strap on my connie now. Omega gave me a black sheen sheep thin sheep skin strap but I didn;t quite like that. will post a pic for you soon.

It stands for O'r Massif
which from what I can recall means you case is solid 18K gold. Mine micron plated hence the lack of OM.

And thanks for chiming in... the old omega has its charm definitely... I'm actually tiring of some of my new acquisitions but the old constellation and oyster handed down... not fancy by any measure but I just like knowing I have them and how I got them.....
