Here are some photos of the watch prior to the dial replacement and polish. As you can see, the case must have suffered from quite a bit of oxidation, as the 'before and after' disparity is quite clear! I was too thick to realize it before the polishing, but it now makes perfect sense (and not unlike a marred crystal distorting the appearance of a dial).

Also, you are quite right to point out that is a mistake to allow superficial perceptions to guide one's taste.
