omega and technical prowess
With today's Ultra Deep new models, I am thrilled that Omega brings to production this beast of a watch. I love to see these mechanical marvels make it to regular production, with symmetry and sans date to boot. Of course, this behemoth is not something I would buy -- I remain content with my Pelagos LHD, which is tank-enough for me and my 7" wrist. But knowing Omega has made this, and not just left it at the prototype from a few years ago is great for all lovers of impressive sports/diver watches.
So what I really would like to see is for Omega to bring the Ultra Light (not Ultra Deep) from the realm of beyond reachable/exotic (>USD$40K) to possible. Two weeks ago, I went to my local Omega Boutique and asked if they had one (any color) for me to see in the flesh, try on, admire. My rep, and then the store manager, both said that they had never seen/held one, one has never been delivered to this particular store, and unless one perhaps went to the Manhattan flagship boutique, it is highly unlikely that any store would have one. All to say, the manager said the Ultra Light would only be coming to this store if someone preordered it, with 100% money paid upfront.
I love the Ultra Light, for its idea, a truly shock proof wearable sports watch that should be near-indestructable. Now if only Omega would bring the technology to a watch that is not priced out of this world...
Just for fun, I then asked if they had a 321 or new speedy snoopy in the vault for me to look at in real life. Again, I was told the store had none of either, but they do have fully prepaid orders for both of these models. And most interestingly, they also have a fully prepaid order for the canopus white gold 321 speedy circa USD$80K. I was told that since all these models have been available to purchase, this boutique is receiving them at the rate of only 4 per year. So they will take prepaid orders, but they tell clients it might be 4-6 years before the order is fulfilled.
In conclusion, I wonder whether how many of these Ultra Deep models will be made and delivered, like the "normal" speedies and seamasters. Happy March, but beware the Ides!!!
