Two extraordinary days in Milano

Apr 20, 2023,17:02 PM

Now I suddenly seem to have Panerai fever again, or rather, strangely enough, this brand is now particularly chasing me.

After buying my used 127 a few years ago, my interest in Panerai waned a bit. To now fully inflame again since the end of last year….

Since my visit to the Panerai boutique in Milan last December, I stayed in touch with the lovely team there. This ultimately resulted in a personal invitation last Monday evening to a performance at La Scala in Milan to mark the opening of the Salone del Mobile 2023.

Following this cultural event, including breathtaking ballet performances, a small group of twelve people (two high-ranking Panerai managers, Giuseppe and his colleague from Store Milano and some very nice watch collectors) went to the great BOEUCC ANTICO RISTORANTE (founded in 1696!).

After a fantastic meal, there was also a lot of talk about Panerai and many beautiful pieces were shown to one another.

Of course, I also made two longer (🙏🙄) visits to the Panerai boutique in Milano.

In addition to the tourbillons, which fascinate me (dear purists: I know, tourbillon and Panerai don't work at all. I know. I know. I know!!! 🙏🙏🙏 😂)

I was also allowed to look at some new releases and also some already known watches, which I would be very happy to share with you:

This also led to some interesting conversations, because leading Panerai managers kept showing up in the store.

And my remarks, some of which were critical, were listened to attentively. Does it do anything? No idea. But I have the impression that they are really interested in listening to customers' opinions. At least I felt … heard. 😁

And there she was again. The 670 that has been following me for a long time. Also not the „wet dream“ of all the purists here, I know. 🙏

But the watch has so many things that REALLY appeal to me:
There's a lot going on on the dial. Granted. But everything is solved harmoniously and extremely tastefully: the numbers 3 - 6 - 9 - 12 are all visible. The date window is very subtle and 100% in the color of the dial.
The 670 offers also very fine, very useful features, at least for me: manual winding, 8-day power reserve (display on the back), GMT, date and month displays, 24-hour display.
The equation of time complication is at least … funny.
The whole thing in a beautiful titanium case with WR 10 bar. And the color of the dial together with the gold applications, hands and numerals is just a feast for the eyes!

The P.2002 movement has 3 spring barrels and the rate accuracy observed over the last 4,5 days is +7 seconds, which means a very good +1.5 seconds per day in the process.

I didn't want to buy anything. But I've gotten weak again. And - nevertheless - I'm very happy about my decision! ☺️

Thanks for looking and all the best, my dear friends!

Thomas

Very much enjoy these. Thank you Thomas

Thanks for a great all-Italian report Thomas, happy you had a chance to attend this terrific event! I've never been invited by Panerai, but brands are not foreign to hosting events "alla Scala," one of the finest venues in town. Always worth a trip! ;-)

I wish all the best to Panerai, and despite their recent issues, I'm glad to see they are investing on the communication side in a clever and effective way. Looking forward to seeing your next purchase with them! Cheers.

Thank you for your very kind words, dear Fabrizio!

I have the feeling that they are learning from the recent time or at least are willing to learn. And that they (now) really care about customers. During these two days at times I felt like a carp in a pike pond. But they were very nice pike! 😉 Cheers Thom...

Definitely a charm offensive that was impossible to resist.

Hahahahaha

I felt like someone who wants and should be angry with their child or pet, which they love very much, because it was bad, but in the long run can't be angry… 🙄🙏

gorgeous photos !!👏you should go for it

As you know the rule is simple: buy what you like 😅 If you listen to too many purists you end up only looking at very old, rusty, grandpa style panerais.

Hahahahaha!!!

Dear Christian, I went for it! ☺️ Cheers Thomas ...

I resemble & resent that remark!

Cazalea ...

A wonderful piece, dear Cazalea!

An definitely not “grandpa style”. All the best Thomas

sorry, I didn't refer to anyone specifically and your PAM is wonderful

 By: christianch : April 21st, 2023-23:04
was just directly more generally to some people that in the past didn't approve of any new modern panerai

No offense taken

 By: cazalea : April 22nd, 2023-02:14
I just bought the plainest, simplest Panerai because it felt right at the time. Cazalea

Thanks a lot, mon ami!

I have to admit that there were a few pieces that I liked in person.

I am aware of the 'old school' character pairs...

 By: mdg : April 20th, 2023-20:34
...a lot of the rest was not kerned. It's OK, most people never notice. I notice everything ...it's a curse : )

Thanks Thomas for this review and photos

Sorry, I didn’t ask for the reference of this piece. It’s a new, still not “official” release. I haven't found anything on the website yet?

Not the best quality (sorry), but for a first impression. This iteration I liked most: Cheers Thomas ...

I am not a fan of the clean/minimalist Panerai style. I would lie if I tell the opposite.

 By: aWtchslvr : April 22nd, 2023-11:12
Probably that is the reason why I would choose any of the models shown in the first picture. Thanks for the answer and best weekend.

G’damn!! What a post!!!!

This dial is a little bit like a chameleon. It almost seems to go with everything. So many shades of blue… All the best Thomas ...

Milano is a nice city! And congrats on being able to snag a box at Teatro Alla Scala!

Wait until you go to Panerai in Firenze! That's the original store! Lots of history there, and it's right next door to the famous cathedral!

Thank you, dear Patrick.

I have been there at Easter. 🙏☺️ See my other post. Cheers Thomas

Thanks for your great post. I must admit that anything posted after Il Duomo fades for me (even the cool Panerais)

 By: LarsG : April 21st, 2023-13:50
What a fantastic Catholic Church. I visited 20 years ago and still remember it with admiration. Enjoy!

Yes, this Duomo is a marvel, Lars.

I have to admit...

 By: sergio : April 21st, 2023-23:26
...the Panerai's official functions are quite something. The Scala gig must have been fantastic. Thanks for guiding us through it

È stato ed è un piacere mio, Sergio!

 By: MTR : April 22nd, 2023-22:48
And yes, the Scala performance as well as the restaurant visit afterwards will remain in my memory. Thank you for your kind words ...

Very nice pictures and great report!

I think you captured the texture of the cases quite well. The green luminor navy seals is an interesting piece. The 670 is a great piece.
