Witch-hunt

No...I see no witch-hunt. What i do see is a guy called Catulle who basically only wants to complain. I have watches that have aspects that I don't like...but they also have aspects I do like...that is why I own them. I have watches that are not seen as desirable by others. Fine...I am not asking others to wear my watches. Each and every watch that i own is owned because it gives me pleasure in one way or another. It doesn't give me pleasure because of what others think...in most instances, I will only wear an "expensive" watch when I am at home and NOT going out! I guess I must be trying to impress my wife! But we all differ on what appeals to us in a watch...there is no right or wrong.... just a personal view.

Yes...we all collect watches for different reasons. If I wanted to show-off, however, I would not use watches as a conduit to show that. I would use helicopters, Lear jets, and large country estates jam-packed with Rodin, Picaso and Kandinsky. I'd probably want to own a football club too. And a 100m yacht moored at Monaco. Yes, if i wanted to show my affluence, watches would be a truly awful way of doing it. For one thing, 99.9% of the population wouldn't be able to tell a 5970P from a Swatch. So i disagree with the idea that watches are bought because they show off our affluence.

However, I am sure some will do that. I don't know that many to be honest.

No...my problem with Catulle's approach is that this is a watch lovers forum. We gather here to discuss watches...discuss the passion and share the joy. Of course, when there are negative things to say, we should also say them and this is 100% the place to do that too. However, just about the only thing that Catulle did was share that overlay of misery that he gets from owning his watches. From Patek to JLC.... just complaints and unhappiness. It is almost like he is forced to wear a watch against his will. And his misery in wearing that watch has to find an outlet. This is a watch forum for watch lovers. It is not a forum for people who hate watches!!

By all means make critical comments about a watch....it is fine to do so. But balance that out by also sharing the joy and the passion and...for goodness sake...the happiness that owning a watch brings TOO. When all someone does is whinge and gripe about something.... I get bored of listening to them. When someone tells me that I buy a watch because I want to show off my affluence...it makes me laugh. ... a lot.
