IP scrutiny and all... It never ceases to amaze me the degree of fanaticism and the kind of Stockholm syndrome that seems to affect these fora. Yes, how many posts... 13? Wow, too many. See, I used to participate in these fora since Richard Paige, remember Richard? 1995-1996? But I quit several years ago and have just returned I don't know why. As a matter of fact, this is a hello and good-bye.
My point is the following: Look at the close-up pictures somewhere on the net of a JLC chrono dial. Can't anyone see how the applied numerals are poorly placed on the surface of the dial? How you can easily slip a thick hair between the marker and the dial? But everyone is going crazy about the beautiful, the AWESOME damn watch. On and on. The Swiss have no qualms charging the outrageous amounts they do for a watch that costs no more than a few hundred dollars to manufacture, they charge you whatever they want for service and make you wait months for a mediocre 15 minutes job, yet these watch fora's only purpose seem to be sycophantic rants, and an armed defense of what only can be described as neurotic obsessive behavior.
It would seem to me that EVERYONE would benefit if we were a bit more objective and demanding about what we get for our money. People like the ones at Patek Philippe giggle or muffle outright laughter watching people pay what they do for one of those annual calendar watches, or for any Patek Philippe watch for that matter. I think where I'm wrong is in thinking that places such as these should not be reserved only for the blind fanatic, for those that need reassurance that the money they spent in a silly watch was money well spent. Indeed, I'm starting to realize, again, that in these fora you better keep your mouth shut if you have nothing nice to say. Don't rock the boat. Don't turn on the light. Keep it all nice and quiet because the king does have his robe on.
Rants? Do you want me to tell you when I was told at the factory by the head of watchmaking trainers at Patek how Ref. 5035, the first annual, calendar, was indeed a defective design which was the source of a great deal of trouble for them? But they kept on selling the watch and people kept on ranting about how AWESOME their watches were. I have enough real life stories to put you to sleep.
Look, fine, so you guys like watches and I do too, kind of. But, do we need to restrict participation here to sycophantic odes? Must everyone be so damn defensive? Can't we openly speak our minds about the evident without having a pose running to shut down the few who dare? Naw, you guys are right. This is not the place to point out that the king is naked. This a place for gentlemanly (????) discourse. A place for fellating the brands while the manufacturers laugh their way to the bank.
Carry on, GENTLEMEN. Please accept my apologies for invading your well groomed and protected lawn. Just watch you don't step on the German Shepperd's waste.
