no date....but for these 2, date please...
Although I echo everyone else's sentiment of no-date, the thing is, the new auto 40 loses something due to the "relatively larger" size of the numerals to me. For me, the Portugueser is all about being oversized, but paired with those slightly awkward but super charming undersized numerals. When put side-by-side, the special edition feels more "Authentic" and the new auto 40 lacks that "flavor" (feels a bit flat). And when turned around, I think the manual is also superior (and with that 8 day power reserve vs just the auto rotor).
If one is into this type of simple and elegant design with arabic numeral indices, I'd think the Lange 1815 would be a much better looking watch. In photo it's not much; but every time I see it in real life, it's pretty magical (probably because the galvanized dial and the crazily fine print numerals).

I prefer the no date version here. But it’s the blue numerals that are influencing my preference most.
I typically lean towards no date, especially if a cyclops accompanies the date. But a well placed, well executed date window isn’t necessarily a deal breaker.

No date, especially when it is brought in into to the original model
and now, part or not part of the original version, no date at all unless I can see it with my naked eye.
It's all a matter of execution (and context) for me.

It depends.
Very pure watches like the IWC that you show are better without a date. Other than that I can easily live with a date. The only no-go is a date placement that reveals a (too) small movement for the chosen case size.
No date
I don't need the date on the watch as I usually know what the date is. When I'm retired, I couldn't care less what the date is anyway, so why bother? The watch looks much better without the date in this case. Richard

Daily wear watches (regardless leisure or work) I like a date. It’s just a useful complication. When it comes to a real dress watch than no date.

Rolex and ALS watches need a date... This is typical for these brands. When it comes to simple but elegant „dress watches“ I would do without a date display.
Date for me
Date is a must for me. I have one Rolex and one Montblanc that does not have the date and it drives me crazy because all my other watches have the date so I'm quite used to looking at my wrist for the date when signing documents for work.
