Laurent Ferrier now being sold on Mr. Porter

Feb 02, 2021,07:19 AM

Does anyone have a clue why this collaboration took place? Personally I am disappointed and I want to hear everyone’s view on this. I take this watch collecting hobby quite seriously and LF has made wonderful watches since it’s inception. I think to list their stock on Mr. Porter is not befitting of its image (I know, I know. Vacheron and some other brands are also there too). I shop a lot from the website but I have never thought twice of buying a watch from them. LF....wth are you thinking 🙄

I’m truly a little affected

Yours Truly,
Gatsby

I always nod when I read what you have to say!!

I think they are taking inspiration from JLC, next might come a limited edition..😎

Seriously, I’m entirely with you here, and can easily understand how disappointing a similar move is if you are a genuine fan of the brand. I think you know how much I LOVE Patek, and I can tell you without hesitation that I’d most likely be done buying t...

If Patek really listed their stuff on Mr. Porter, you really aren’t going to buy their watches again? I cannot say that I would readily do that myself. A great product is still a great product no matter where it’s being offered. But someone needs to tell ...

The short answer is yes ;-) For me, the point in buying a great watch is not only the watch itself, but also an entire experience, the brand, its values and history, etc..

I mentioned the limit example of Patek precisely because, should they ever advertise their watches on a fashion website (something fortunately unrealistic to happen under current management), that would already imply I'd no longer identify with the *value...

Well, I have to agree with FabR. The buying experience is very important in my decisions regarding watches. Especially in the high end and independent segments.

I do own one LF, a galet micro rotor, and I love it. I wanted to add a second one with the galet square to my collection, but in the end I didn't buy one because of the market behaviour of LF, which seemed strange to me. I have to say, that the listing on...

I can understand this if...

Patek was ONLY sold on Mr. Porter. Could you not still have your experience at your preferred AD or Boutique? For those not interested in experience and wishing to pay full price they could utilize Mr. Porter. How would you feel if Patek decided to open u...

Yep, to be frank I still would *not* be a big fan, but selling online would be a less significant/substantial change in direction (in fact, Patek did briefly allow it last year -- via its ADs -- as an exceptional measure at the start of the pandemic).

 By: FabR : February 2nd, 2021-14:54
But the main point for me is that the image of a high-end (watch or otherwise) brand has to go well beyond us buying, or them selling, a product. And the experience a brand provides to *any* customer is clearly a consequence of their image, and therefore ...

Fair enough

You would guess correctly, I would be turned off by any watch that I love being sold at Walmart... with the exception of Seiko. Your example pushed it wayyy past the extreme (LOL) but you make a valid point. Thanks for your answer Fab, and maybe I’ll bump...

My pleasure😂😉🥂

I understand where you are coming from. But it is not easy for small independents like LF to survive.

 By: als1678 : February 2nd, 2021-08:27
At least Mr Porter won't shift inventory to the grey market the way their ADs often do ... And if you can buy watches online from chrono24 why not from Mr Porter? It provides a retail platform, I don't think it cheapens the brand in any way. But that's ho...

You have a point regarding their survival

Thanks for your thoughts mate

LF has been on Hodinkee’s offerings for quite some time now.

 By: Lankysudanese : February 2nd, 2021-09:04
They also carry Urwerk. As much as I have issues with some of Hodinkee’s decisions, I never saw that as a reflection on LF or Urwerk. Mr Porter is a very tastefully-curated platform. If you like Laurent Ferrier for the design and aesthetics, don’t let the...

Whatever keeps them in business and making watches at the same quality is good.

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : February 2nd, 2021-09:22
Why would anyone care where they are sold? If the watch is the same watch but we only care about how nice the furniture is at the place we buy it, then we have stepped away from actually appreciating the watch and the craftsmanship that went into it. Just...

the Classic green Origin and it takes time and it is not their Business model. So, in complement to their official AD's, any collaboration could be fine, as Hodinkee, etc.... The much important is the Quality of their watches. Not easy to everyone to see ...

Disappointing decision...

I don’t feel it’s in keeping with the brand image.

I enjoy reading everyone’s opinion on the matter. Whether one is for or against it, the reasoning on both sides are sound. Guess it’s a matter of how easy going one is. Some are very particular....some aren’t....however there is no doubt about certain imp...

I do not understand this online shopping, of new watches, at all!

When spending a serious amount of money on an independent watch, make it a little party. Get the car, train or plane and buy the watch in your favorite city and make it a superb weekend. It is so much more exiting to visit a good dealer or brandstore, tha...

When their NIB watches sell for 50% of retail....what can you do?

 By: Clueless_Collector : February 2nd, 2021-11:15
It is sad to see such high quality watches not getting the same attention or affection....similarly for the other brand you mentioned, DB, strange collecting world.

Sorry buddy, not sure if it’s legal here but ...

But we have to consider that traffic in the stores, where they are open, is severely down. So is the general interest in buying watches. So, they have to reach the global consumer somehow. I believe that no-one can blame them for a business decision whose...
