Independents

IMHO

And looking at where the original insta post comes from, I belive it was not targeted for "Brands" but rather for "watchmakers" (Cramain, Dufour, Coyon, AdC etc). I guess this was intended to shed some light on what is "handmade" and what is not.
A lot of people believe for example Dufour is handmade, but the components are made via CNC machining, dial outsourced as well as hands and case, but the finish is spectacularly done by himself, so we should maybe coin the terms "Custom made" and "hand finished" for his production.
On another side of this spectrum, let's go with Daniels watches. They were handmade. Even if not by him but by Roger Smith towards the end, the components were made manually on hand operated machines. The finish isn't on par with Dufour or Coyon, but it is harder to finish a movement that was done by hand than done via modern high tech machines.
As for what is better, I guess it comes down to personnal preference. For me I'd rather have a not so amazingly finished watch made by hand than a watch custom made with outsourced parts (and that is easier to say when I do not have the means to acquire neither of them!)
Best,
Tristan
