Watches and wonders 2023: Angelus Chronodate. 3 new iterations.

 By: amanico : July 21st, 2023-15:30
After having unveiled the Chronodate last year, Angelus comes back to this chronograph with three new versions. 2 Titanium with a black or a green dial, and a Rose Gold. The two Titanium come on a strap or a bracelet, while the rose gold comes on a strap ...

This is a technically amazing watch that doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

 By: patrick_y : July 21st, 2023-16:27
One of our former moderators introduced me to this brand years ago. At first I overlooked this brand probably because it isn't a famous brand that everyone has heard of (I guess I was a sheep instead of a shepherd at one point too). This is one amazing ch...

I thought otherwise about the movement, but I'd be glad to be proven wrong

 By: blau : July 21st, 2023-16:39
I really like what Angelus has been doing but I thought this movement looked like a 7750 clone with column wheel worked in.

 By: patrick_y : July 21st, 2023-16:58
Maybe you're right... Maybe that's why the architecture is so good. I haven't compared the two movements yet. And the one the former moderator showed me was a manual wind, so I am partially over-influenced by that piece rather than the piece before us, wh...

I agree.

 By: amanico : July 21st, 2023-21:49

I wanted to like this, but I didn't.

 By: blau : July 21st, 2023-16:38
The case shape is really cool, the dial works, and I like the idea of reviving what was, in the 1940s, a very forward-looking watch by making, in the 2020s, a very-forward-looking watch. Three complaints: 1. You referred to this: 30m water resistance. Tha...

Thank you for sharing your well considered thoughts!

 By: patrick_y : July 21st, 2023-17:00
Yes. I definitely agree with you that water resistance is lacking. The AP Royal Oak also has terrible water resistance too - which is also unfortunate.

 By: amanico : July 21st, 2023-22:05

That’s the reason why I haven’t bought an AP Royal Oak yet.

 By: MTR : July 22nd, 2023-11:58
If I want and buy a sports watch it has to be robust and not just looking / pretending to be robust. 😉 Same here for the Angelus. In addition to the poor price-performance ratio (as blau explained comprehensively: not a very impressive movement) the poor ...

That's very fair!

 By: patrick_y : July 22nd, 2023-18:16
Yes... The AP RO is not a very sporty watch in many senses. The Patek Philippe Nautilus is also not very water resistant. Some models only have 60 meters water resistance. I personally don't recommend swimming without at least 100m water resistance.

I would even go so far as to say that

 By: MTR : July 22nd, 2023-23:05
every serious premium watch should have 100m water resistance as standard. I can't imagine that the implementation is such a problem. My theory: the manufacturers don't explicitly concern themselves with this because the market doesn't appreciate the addi...

You're exactly right!

 By: patrick_y : July 22nd, 2023-23:18
Yes. It's not a major concern for most customers. Who never think about all their needs and wants and never communicate them to the salespeople nor the manufacturers. And yes. The Luminor Due is an embarrassment! Come on Panerai! Really??? Are you kidding...

Even ultra thin ones???

 By: amanico : July 23rd, 2023-04:53

Yes, why not?

 By: MTR : July 23rd, 2023-06:46
Some manufacturers invest a lot of money in R&D to make the movements thinner and thinner. Or invest to artistically embellish the dial. Why not put a bit of that effort into the development of a case that really protects the movement? Small examples: BP,...

 By: MTR : July 23rd, 2023-22:07
that be all the more reason to protect them better? 😉

I personally really don't like lug holes for the strap spring bars...

 By: patrick_y : July 24th, 2023-04:24
A lot of these Grand Seiko pieces have these lug holes.

 By: MTR : July 24th, 2023-07:13
Isn’t it a better solution than holes in the case?

Well, the Grand Seiko still has holes in the case.

 By: patrick_y : July 24th, 2023-07:24
I just don't like the hole that's visible from the outside of the lug. Just a personal preference.

 By: MTR : July 24th, 2023-07:28
Blancpain has it under the lugs where you don’t see them.

Thanks for the report and pictures Nico.

 By: GWIS : July 21st, 2023-16:43
I like them. I prefer the black dial over the green. All the best, Jon

I really like those.

Something different and fresh. Would really like to see one of those in the flesh.

A bit, a bit, indeed!

 By: amanico : July 21st, 2023-21:52

Thanks for your analysis, Nico!!!

 By: Mach : July 21st, 2023-17:45
I finally saw one in the metal just a few weeks ago: I really liked the overall execution. However, I could do without the ‘Start,” “Stop,” and “Reset” on the pushers. They must have anticipated a lot of their buyers may become intoxicated and forget how ...

I would have picked one up as a cool vacation watch

 By: TeutonicCarFan : July 21st, 2023-17:47
But 30m WR makes no sense. Modern crowns, pusher and case technology and can't get better. 🤷‍♂️

Agreed. On all counts.

A very interesting watch. I share your analysis. The price seems to be over ambitious.

Merci, Hora.

Yes, a flaw, indeed.
