Some manufacturers invest a lot of money in R&D to make the movements thinner and thinner. Or invest to artistically embellish the dial.
Why not put a bit of that effort into the development of a case that really protects the movement?
Small examples: BP, for example, managed to put their correction pushers under the lugs. Other manufacturers manage to make important corrections via the crown or the bezel.
Many other quality manufacturers still drill holes in the case.
