Independents

I hate to say it... But I think it's mostly for marketing.

Does anyone else remember Walthams "100 jewel" movement?  The additional jewels were added simply for the sake of, to make it sound like a higher quality movement;

This was a carry over from a time when watches with more jewels were, generally, considered higher quality.  For example;

This movement was available in higher grades, where it added jewels over the pinions;

Note the added jewel over the second (center) wheel.  This was a higher grade version of the movement, impart (and other factors) due to the additional jewels, which certainly matter up to a point.  I think additional positions matter, again, up to a point.  A low grade movement may only be adjusted in one or two positions and, so to show their mettle, manufactures started talking about measuring to 4 or 5 positions.  Now we are at 6.

At least that's my 2 cents...
