Independents

A nice road trip and some great independent visits

We've just taken a lovely trip with a very good friend. It wasn’t the first time, and it certainly won’t be the last, that we’ve traveled through Germany, Switzerland, or France to visit several manufacturers, especially independents.

The beast we drove ( not mine but it was pretty fun to drive and definitely on the German highway if you know what I mean smile

Great car but that dan consumption is a disaster. On the highway ( ok we used all the power it has and let's say we drove a bit fast ) but at 28 lites per 100 km ....

Anyway.... Let's take a closer look at the first brand cause cars are not really my thing.

Lang & Heyne
Probably my favourite German brand. Yes? I put it above Lange & Söhne and Moritz Grossman. Last 2 are good and make fantastic watches but L&H speaks to me the most.

Concenring the hands, I appreciate this baroque hands but I would not chose them, for me those are way to busy and just a bit too much.
But no problem, there are enough options

Ofcourse they use CNC machines but I was pretty surprised by the amount of hand finishing they still put in these gorgeous watches.
The anglage and inward angles to name just 2 things are very, very close to perfection.
Maybe I might be a bit biased cause it's a brand I adore but I think I can say the level of finishing is better than the 2 other German brands I mentioned before.

Some raw material

some parts,

ok, an iPhone is not the equipment you need when trying to take real close ups of tiny, TINY parts

Parts from real old watches

Enamel dials ?
Sublime made inhouse.
We saw some examples and were once again explained how har dit is to make such a dial
All the steps it takes and everything that can go during the process
I said ' explained once again' cause after visinting a few dozen manufactures, you already do know some stuff smile

Beleve me, the dials were perfect  ... But again ... I used an iPhone instead of a professional camera

It is thanks to the passion, craftsmanship, and patience of these individuals that we can truly delve into our fascination with watches.

some parts.
Finished vs non finished

Watches,

I'll add a few stock pics from L&H cause These watches deserve professional photography instead of the chaos I produce with my iPhone.

I would like to thank Gülsen for the fantastic day, the explanations, and the passion. Later that evening, we enjoyed a very pleasant dinner and had truly fascinating conversations.

on the road  again and time for some nature and culture smile

Another visit ; Kallinich Claeys
And this might be a brand unknown to even quite a few collectors, enthusiast on a forum like watchprosite.

Kallinich Claeys is a pretty new brand but definitely worth taking a closer look at it

This is, in fact, a fascinating story that clearly illustrates what passion truly means. Claeys is trained as a engineer, and after completing his studies he was unfortunately confronted with a medical issue. This forced him to reflect on what he really wanted to do in life. From an early age, he had already developed an interest in watches, and he began asking himself: “Why not do something in the world of watchmaking?”

He enrolled in a watchmaking school, where he certainly learned a great deal, but in his opinion not nearly enough. A subsequent position at Lange & Söhne shaped him even further.

Now, aspiring watchmakers rarely have the budget to invest in extremely expensive CNC machines. Claeys’ solution is nothing short of brilliant. He purchases certain components and, drawing on his engineering background, invents and builds enough himself to create a fully functional CNC machine—entirely self-made.

A simple cabinet serves as the frame, with an oil reservoir at the bottom for the CNC machining process. The oil is filtered using pieces of old, worn-out shirts. The necessary cooling system was built from the cooling components of an older PC. In short, I find it deeply admirable that he designs and builds all of this himself, and that it performs exactly as it should ..without having to spend a fortune.

now time for some wonderful watches.

I can tell you these guys are working on a next watch.
One with a complication but I can't tell more for the moment.
I saw things but it's still under embargo

Another visit ... Marco Lang

A great conversation but Marco is also working on another watch ... but also in this case I'm not allowed to tell more cause it's also under embargo
I can tell its a very nice and impressive complicated watch.

But for the moment I can only show the watch you probably know ... His first piece

That's about it

Hope you enjoyed it

Me and Alex defintely had a great time !!
