why...why is California dial called so...
was looking at the dial for long & the question stuck my mind...why is it called a 'California dial' ?
of course, looked at google...some of the info i got but unsure it is correct (plus there were not much material around the question 'why')...
any historical information around this ?

Why is it called a California dial? Because in the 80's a redial company based in California was refinishing Rolexes with this type of dial. Hence these were since deemed "California" dials. Why was this dial configuration created in the first place? Don'...

i read an article stating, Rolex produced sample dials to emphasize their ability to do roman & arabic numerals - so they did sample dials having both for comparability. i don't know how far it is true, probably Rolex know it ;-) Best, mahesh.,

the link is ends the grail quest also, in the article i love the pics of the 1943 Bubbleback & the Rolex SpeedKing with all numeral dial... they're so elegant - sad Rolex don't make such models now-a-days ! thanks again... Best, mahesh.,
