was looking at the dial for long & the question stuck my mind...why is it called a 'California dial' ? of course, looked at google...some of the info i got but unsure it is correct (plus there were not much material around the question 'why')... any histo...

Why is it called a California dial? Because in the 80's a redial company based in California was refinishing Rolexes with this type of dial. Hence these were since deemed "California" dials. Why was this dial configuration created in the first place? Don'...

i read an article stating, Rolex produced sample dials to emphasize their ability to do roman & arabic numerals - so they did sample dials having both for comparability. i don't know how far it is true, probably Rolex know it ;-) Best, mahesh.,
There are a few theories ... most plausible I think is the popularity of this Rolex bubbleback from LA dealers in the 1980s
