In a thought-provoking post, WatchProSite member mahesh explores a question many luxury watch collectors ponder: can a 'purist' embrace the Apple Watch? His personal struggle with integrating a digital device into a life appreciating mechanical objects sparked a lively debate among enthusiasts, delving into the philosophical and practical aspects of modern horology.
I decided to borrow from my wife and tryout the Apple watch today...
Are there purists who use Apple watch regularly or double wrist with mechanical watches ?
share your thoughts / feeling....
as i enjoy mechanical objects much more, i personally realize the difficulty for me is to accept to switch than whether the product itself is good or not !

Best,
mahesh.,
Key Points from the Discussion
- The Apple Watch represents a significant technological leap in wristwatches, akin to past innovations like the minute hand or complex complications on pocket watches. However, privacy concerns regarding data collection remain a barrier for some.
- Mechanical watches offer enduring value and community engagement that digital devices cannot replicate, as smartwatches are designed for obsolescence with limited battery life and no long-term serviceability.
- Smartwatches function as modern tool watches, capable of reducing phone dependence and screen time. They offer extensive functionality for fitness tracking and connectivity, making them a practical choice for daily wear, even if it means less wrist time for mechanical pieces.
- Some collectors use smartwatches like Apple Watch or Garmin as functional tools for workouts or as phone replacements, often double-wristing with a mechanical watch for aesthetic or traditional reasons.
- The necessity of daily charging and constant alerts are significant drawbacks for some users, who prefer the 'always-on' reliability of mechanical or solar-powered quartz watches.
- Despite owning multiple Apple devices, some purists find the Apple Watch's constant notifications and tracking features intrusive, preferring to maintain independence from digital monitoring.
