Battle of price equivalence, part I...

Initially listed (at an unnamed dealer) at the same exact price...to the dollar (pre-owned). Now within striking distance of each other. Value is subjective, without a doubt, but I still sometimes scratch my head in confusion over this hobby... ...

That GMT is the solid white gold version

So it already comes at a premium. BTW, I prefer that blue dial to the standard black one on the SS version. If Rolex gave the Blue dial to the new SS GMT I would've definitely bought one.

Understood regarding white gold...definitely a stiff premium over SS.

Still a difficult price point for me in light of what else those dollars could buy.

Does make me wonder too sometimes.

Iโ€™m blessed to own the GMT but it lies very much in the shadows and cannot be compared with the Lange - itโ€™s a funny old game this hobby of ours

Same here, John, very same here. Even more when you compare some vintage to moderns...

For example, you could get a Lemania 15 TL military or a Heuer Bund for the price of a Rolex Date Just. Best, Nicolas

The value of vintage over modern cannot be denied.

You of all people definitely carry the banner of that view

Instagramification of watch enthusiasm?

Obsessed with the symbols of wealth and luxury...

Very well

5711 Tiffany dial or a bit more for 5970 (or the same for 5270)?

Indeed! [nt]

All part of lifeโ€™s rich pattern ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yes, that is one way of putting it :)

"Bonkers" is another way...

Value is personal.

We all come from different backgrounds and are at different locations on our life's journey. I too have difficulty wrapping my mind around the shifting market. However, when I began my interest in watches, certain Panerai's with a modified ETA movement so...

Of course...as I conceded in my original post, value is subjective.

Just some commentary on the nuttiness I see in the market for highly-symbolic luxury goods.

Agreed.

 By: John-E-Mac : September 9th, 2019-05:49
I should have been more emphatic in my agreement with you. However, I have to remind myself that I am only one data point on a chart of +7 billion data points. There are many perspectives out there and what I feel as "crazy" is just everyday "normal" for ...

Well said (nt)

Agreed, this is crazy, although this is a crazy passion of ours!

 By: pejp : September 8th, 2019-20:11
the WG GMT was the point that Rolex โ€˜lost itโ€™ for me. Really not a fan of it at all, so Iโ€™m biased in that I donโ€™t like this particular piece anyway, but the idea that a Datograph, which to me is one of the greatest watches of all time, can be had for the...
