Titanium Dials..
Mar 02, 2021,01:51 AM
While examining various watches from marquee brands, I noticed that Omega produces some models such as the PloProf with titanium dials.
The Ti dial, naturally in grey with a grainy finish; does look fabulous. I also noticed that the titanium cased watches with titanium dials are priced more expensively than titanium with brass + lacquered dials.
Wondering if the titanium dials are difficult to produce do to machining complexities.
Also curious to know of other watch brands that include titanium dials in their watches.
Cheers

I think titanium is a metal. Lighter that stainless steel, and stronger i think. T is tritium, a radioactive mineral that used to lume dials and hands. No daylight is needed to light up in the dark.
Ti is the atomic symbol

Ti is the atomic table symbol for titanium and it is not a radioactive material. It is as strong as steel but 45% lighter than steel.

is not my metal of choice for watches. Steel, gold, platinum and ceramic are 👍🏻. Titanium is an outstanding metal but it scratches and for me not visually appealing. I purchased a ti Tissot @ 2006 and regretted it.
Thanks very much. One question further..

Is it natural for titanium dials to develop a layer of natural oxidation ? Under a loupe I noticed that the Ploprof titanium dial appears to have a slight rough/ grainy surface. regds
Nope

"Titanium is practically immune to all corrosive agents" so that surface would have to be formed by blasting, chemical etching, or contact tapping. Over time though, scratches tend to "heal" by changing color slightly.
Wow.
