Oops - I did not mean to say the 96 was bad design..
Must be late and my brain is not engaging my fingers! :-(
In my mind, I just exclude diamonds from the "classic watch" equation as a whole to avoid having to split hairs. FOr me, whether a watch can be attractive on its own strength is the key - even more so if its to be considered a classic.
I am okay with watches designed from scratch with diamonds but some watches that have diamonds as an afterthought - well, are just variations to the original to me. 
So - we agree to disagree lah.
