My 2 cents: I don't care what he thinks or says about watches
I don’t have to listen to his music or his talking, and I don’t have to buy watches he likes.
The idea that someone who can play music (act in movies, etc) has any unique talent or wisdom whatsoever in any other area of life is known as:
Argumentum Ad Verecundiam

But personally I’d put the blame on Hodinkee first because they are the megaphone, broadcasting whatever baloney helps to fills their sandwich.

Just read an article about how influential
John Mayer is in the watch collecting world and how he can drive the price of new and vintage watches up. When he wears a piece in concert or a photo shoot dealers will start to hoard that particular piece in anticipation of rising prices.
Honestly that would put me off but

My AD told me he got five calls for a green dial Daytona the next day. That watch immediately went from "I can order one" to "unobtainium." Just one example of what happens these days when a celebrity wears a certain watch or hypes it in an interview.

The problem is everyone but...
It starts with those who believe they should own a certain piece because someone else says so or has one.
There is without doubt a lot of buying like this; but it’s not just watches and this type of influencing was always there so it’s nothing new.
What has turbocharged it is social media, the internet etc.
Very true...
But for many of us this phenomenon in the high end watch industry affects us more personally than any other product. At least in my case and YMMV.
